actually it was returned to dell, so i had to swap the case out. still have a few parts left over that i'm selling. my 6300 card and sdd from the M15x still live on in my R3 soo thats a little comforting, hehheehe

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Well, it's good that some parts survive. Old Yeller belongs in the M15x Hall of Fame.
-
Here we go... some more runs with the 6970m, this time with moderate OC, CPU at standard values (24/23/17/17 - TDP/TDC 62/62 ...that's standard for my ES, don't know whether the OEM differs in the TDP/TDC standard)
Core: 755 MHz (75 MHz OC)
Core: 785 MHz (105 MHz OC)
Core: 785 MHz (105 MHz OC) Memory: 1005 MHz (105 MHz OC)
-
wow nice runs. the max i tested my 6970 was 850/1250.
-
Thanks! I didn't raise the mem so much as it mostly seems to generate heat. Haha, 2GB GDDR5 is way overkill imo. This card really lives up to my expectations so far. Now I need to find a good solution for the fans and I'm happy. Of course it's too early to say anything definite, but so far the card seems to work fine.

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
That's a strong M15x. It looks like you end up in about the same place no matter which way you go. It probably needs more power to drive both CPU and GPU further, but vram temps are pretty warm. Still, YOU GOT IT WORKING ! How cool is that? +Rep +Rep (when allowed) + The M15x Pioneer Award to svl7. Congratulations and thanks.
-
yeah the 6970 is way overkill for almost everything, i leave mine at stock pretty much. congrats man now you officially have the most powerful M15x ever!!!!
-
Thanks a lot guys
You both helped a lot (as always
), and maybe more important, you encourage to do such things in the first place, haha. And thanks again to RogueOP who provided his M15x for testing...! +Rep of course for all of you... as soon as I can spread rep again, hahaha.
I'm looking forward to hear from other users who get the 6970m, especially the Dell version. (The fan control with the Dell card works, right?)
We need some more investigation about the power consumption, I will check whether I can somehow borrow a device to measure the total consumption of my system. 920xm and 6970m is definitely borderline... I don't think the 240W PSU will really help as the total power consumption is probably limited by some components on the mobo. -
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Nice runs svl7! I'll get things updated again soon so you can sit as top dog on the boards
Is that a clevo/sager card or a dell card?
Oh and Rev the M15x isn't off the outlet they may have just not had any "available stock" at the moment. -
Hehe, thanks a lot! I got the card from MXM-upgrade... doesn't seem to be a Clevo card according to The Rev (I don't know how to recognize a clevo card as I never had one). Check out GPU-Z on the screenshot, this may help you to find the info you're looking for. At Subvendor it says "Sapphire/PCPartner"...

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Yep, it's back, with 2 choices. Sure looked bad earlier. -
I wouldn't mind seeing a 3DMark11 run with that beast. Tessellation performance is supposed to be much better.
-
Nice runs! Bet you can push to at least 800 on the core, maybe not too much more on the memory because of the temps but nice! Makes me so tempted to ditch the Cuda softwares I'm working on and jump on the ATi wagon.

3400 is a very nice score.. I am wondering though.. how is it that the 17r3 scored a 4100 with SB and same gpu? CPU speeds are close. GPU is the same.. Any thoughts?
StevenX -
Maybe power issues, I have to investigate to make sure. I haven't seen the M17x r3 benches, I will take a look at them.
-
i just ran a 780/1000 so you can compare.

The R3 guys are pushing their 6970's much harder, so it's hard to get a comparison yet. For whatever reason, the 6970's in the R3's are running much cooler and allowing o/c's of 850-860/1200-1250, which result in Vantage GPU scores of 14,200 +/- vs about 12,000 in svl7's M15x, and that's most of the difference. The CPU scores are higher as well, but have less influence on the overall score.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
You forgot the link, Inap.
Nevermind, up now.
How about doing a Vantage run at 785/1005 to allow a direct comparison on CPU/GPU performance. -
The 6970m heatsink of the M17x r3 also has 3 heatpipes if I remember correctly, whereas the M15x heatsink only has 2 heatpipes, this probably makes quite a difference.
Like I mentioned before, I'll see whether I can somehow measure the total power consumption... I want't to have some numbers before pushing it too hard.
@Inap: Thanks for the bench score! -
here you go bud.

CPU smackdown? Is 13k for the i7-920xm right? vs 19k for the 230qm?
-
Yeah, I had it at stock clocks (24/23/17/17, and 62/62 TDP/TDC).
-
Hey slv7 have you try this program for your fan control?
Alienware Fan Control -
Yes of course, I use it all the time
But thanks anyway!
-
So does it fix the fan problem?
-
For me it's not a fix... but I can set the fan a bit down when browsing so the noise doesn't annoy me and I can set it on full speed when gaming or benching, this works fine... but you have always to remember to change the speed before doing something which stresses the GPU.
Maybe I'll have luck with the Dell vbios, I keep my fingers crosse.... hope Kris from MXM-upgrade can test it soon. Otherwise I will probably look for a hardware-wise solution. -
Yea Dell delay my order two time so I had cancel the order. The card that I'll be getting is directly from amd. So I don't know it be any different then your card or not.
-
You got it from MXM-upgrade? In this case it would be the same.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Don't blame you at all. Plenty of time for more data and tests, adjusting in small increments. Don't let us push you into something before you're ready; it's easy to be aggressive with someone else's equipment.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
To a point. A stock 920xm will usually run ~14.2-14.5 in Vantage CPU, but with mild overclock will increase to 17.5-18K, and if pushed hard will exceed 20K (up to a max of 21-22K). Inap has a i7-2720. The Sandy Bridge CPU is powerful at 19K+. But it can't be o/c'ed, so it begins and ends at the same place. Hats off to the SB 2720, but the practical difference is not nearly as great as a stock v stock comparison might suggest. As you well know. LOL. -
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
Ok.. so .. with the 150 watt powersupply, how much can you oc the 920xm and the 5850 at the same time?
Stevenx -
you can actually oc both very high with the stock 150 watt psu. i ran 27x on my 940 with my 5850 @ 950/1135. these are benching clocks so the 150 can handle your needs. there were some times that i think the 940 was pulling to much power but we are talking about extreme oc's here so gaming clocks should be good.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
On the other hand, our little 920xm's have to work a LOT harder to keep up, while the SB 2720 is just breezing along, cool and steady.
-
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
You know... it still makes me sad when I go to the ati/amd website and compare the desktop 5850 to our 5850. Nowhere close... Then I look at the 5770 and I say, well... there you are.. In our notebook. Only it's at 850/1200 and ours is at 625/1000.
So.. should I change our sig to say 5850 wearing 5770 underoos? -
Nature of the mobile business.
-
Installed the 11.4 preview and did a run... CPU at stock, GPU at 800/1000... here you go:
I did a second run with the CPU at 24x all cores and 82 TDP, GPU still at 800/1000... the result was a clearly lower score, only 3157. I guess it's caused by power issues. I'll investigate this more thoroughly when I have something around to measure the consumed power. -
Nice numbers! +rep seriously nice. Might start a mission to hunt down a 1120 shader ES version and give it a shot. I have no warranty left anymore so might get something new.
-
Thanks! I really like this card... even though it's not perfect yet... but I love tinkering a bit as well
1120 shaders... me want!
Well, the 960 I have do their job pretty well so far, hahaha. And the temps were ok as well as you can see, without additional cooling.
-
awesome run man. i just broke 4200 myself yesterday.
-
Wow, that's nice!! I've just took a look at the thread in the M17x forum... saw your 1GHz run as well
-
hahaha your gonna have to get use to that once you start pushing it to its limit.
-
Yeah, indeed... here's my "favourite" BSOD from pushing the CPU...
Attached Files:
-
-
yeah i get alot of bsod when pushing the cpu. i tend to get freezes and black screens when pushing the gpu. had time to do a few vantage runs today, best score yet. too bad we can't up the voltage on these cards. have you tested yours to see if upping the voltage is possible on the clevo card.
-
I haven't tested it yet... wait a moment.
-
Ok... doesn't work. I flashed 1.15 and 700/900. At 3d clocks the voltage got forced to 1.00 and the clocks to 400/900
(stealth mode was definitely off)
Now I'm back at the original vbios and everything is fine again. -
ok thanks for trying. man gonna suck for benchers.
-
guy 5850m at 850+ or 900 is it really running stable while running games?
-
how come 6970m is supported? do the bios and heatsink support it?
-
When I adjusted my voltage I was able to run 850 MHz without any issues or artefacts, but the card runs hotter of course.
But anyway, this is the benchmark thread, so the top scores you see here are achieved with clocks at the absolute limit of the card... some people pushed the core clock of the 5850 to more than 1000 MHz!!
For gaming something like 800/1100 will be fine with the 5850, but you probably need to increase the voltage of your card a bit.
Heatsink fits like a charm, but there are still some issues. Fan control doesn't work properly, you need to adjust the fan speed yourself. The Dell version of the card seems to be fine though.
