New owner. I have never owned a laptop. My wife has owned several and we have always bought Dells. I work for an oil company so I am away from home a lot (7 days on and 7 days off). I have built my own computers ever since the old 486 days and just never was pleased with laptops - too hard or impossible to upgrade and work on. I have upgraded and repaired them for friends but never saw a need to own one as mostly I do gaming and I usually have a SFF built that I carry with me for that. Well I finally have to have one for training and I went on Dell's site and bought a Studio 1749. It didn't dawn on me to check Dell outlet for a refurbed Alienware (I have bought a refurbed laptop from Dell before and was pleased with it). Well was rooting around the site and saw the link and looked. There were like 8 pages of refurbed M15x's so cancelled the Studio 1749 and bought the refurbed M15x in my sig. It came with MS 2010 Home and Student Edition and 6 months of McAfee (I would rather have Avast). I got it for $1449 which was only $40 more than the Studio 1749 as I had it configured. What do you think looked like an OK deal to me? It will be delivered tomorrow. Can't wait but will have to I won't be home until Wednesday evening. I was surprised there were like 8 or 9 pages of refurbs when I bought mine and I had to sift through them to find the setup I wanted as there were quite a few that fit the bill but as of this morning there are NONE available
Alienware M15 X Cosmic Black-- Intel Core i7-720QM Quad Core Processor 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache), 6 GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHZ, 1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850, 500 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM), 8X DVD +/- RW Drive, 15.6-inch WideHD+ 1600x900 (900p) WLED, Dell Wireless 1520 802.11n Half Mini-Card, Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module, Win 7 Premium -
Hey its a pretty solid build compared to what you paid.. well paid my friend.. I'm kinda shocked about the price still
-
So I never got my order confirmation email but I phoned in and they gave the order number so I can track it. Since I'm paying with Dell financing is there any important info I'm missing out on from not getting the email? Or is it pretty much just the order number? Thanks.
-
Hay
can someone tell me the windows index scores on the m15x with the i7 740qm and the HD 5850
Thanks -
-
Ya it's pretty trippy my alienware tactx headset arrived before I knew the order was confirmed haha
-
BIOS A07 is up on dells site for download maybe the touchpad is fixed and maybe throttling
-
nope A07 fixes nothing
-
argh yea just read the thread for the A07 BIOS lol
-
yeah i was happy to see the A07 then i read it and got bummed.
-
i just tried to update my system but the screen got stuck on the white alienhead once it starts to load from the cd? any clue what happened i also checked the disk i used and it said it was fine ><
-
how long did it hang? took like 10-15 sec before it started on mine.
-
like a min then i shut down cause it wasn't doing anything gonna burn another cd and see if it was an odd disk
-
yeah keep me posted
-
ok well the hang up for me is really long burned another cd it does its thing and shuts down then upon first boot up from the update it starts up each lock lights up and it restarts. then the boot up screen is up and the black screen then another restart. then on this restart it boots up no problem lol weird events thought this bios bricked my system for a sec
Post 1111 -
yeah had the same thing booted like 2 times before working
-
Ugh, after being coaxed to pick a certain configuration because I was told the computer was already built and would ship immediately I was given a preliminary delivery date of 9/7 now. Also my Dell representatives number is no longer valid so I had to speak to someone that it was painfully obvious their first language wasn't English. Round 2 isn't off to a good start Dell. Luckily they sent my new Xbox 360 so at least I can get my game on until it's here. :/

Very interesting...
Don't know if any of you guys are into MMO's but i recently found out that Everquest 2 has a free to play deal thing going on...
Very interesting.
EDIT: Ok, so it's not out yet but beta for the free to play model should be out by the end of the week. -

So I just got a heart attack after looking at the FF XIV recommended system requirements. I'm like wow.....I dont think I can run this game on high....Note the processor and graphics card. And keep in mind these are DESKTOP components.

* CPU: Intel Core i7 2.66GHz or higher
* RAM: 4GB or more
* HDD/SDD: Installation: 15GB of free space; Download: 6GB of free space on the drive containing "My Documents"
* Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 or better with VRAM 768MB or more
* Sound Card: DirectSound compatible sound card (DirectX 9.0c or higher)
* Internet Connection: Broadband or better (always-on)
* Resolution: 1280x720 (32-bit) or higher

O_O
I mean, 98% of the people won't be able to play this game O_O -
holy crap how much of a better computer do i need lol

Also keep in mind the benchmark is total crap. I got 3k on high one day, 2k the next and 4k the next next day. Consistancy is thrown right out of the window!
Not to mention that they're optimizing the game as the beta continues so by release it will be cake. -
No need to worry about those recommended settings, most companies usually calculate Recommended Specs based on average FPS and system specs used in tests OR just write down a system that is -supposed to be- 2 times better than Required Specs. -
yup, beta's have bugs... that is to be expected. the question is will those bugs be fixed for final release? that is upto the company (if it were ubisoft, you'd have no hope).
-
Whatever it is Ubisoft or not (can't say I disagree but
), when it is about an online game, they always fix it. If they don't, people won't subscribe/buy their game and they will have to go F2P with ads lol
-
I've never even heard of express card before
Anyway, now that I made a pretty cheap mistake I'm gonna get one of these instead(found on eBay USA).
-
I tried the beta nvidia drivers off the Dell site and they still give me a problem with no audio over displayport. I know not many have this issue so this is just FYI to the couple who do, I'm sticking with 186.47.
Interestingly the beta drivers did fix HDCP with my TV. Previously BlueRay would not play on the TV because nvidia said it did not support HDCP but with the beta drivers it does. I use audio over displayport much more than I play BlueRays so it's bittersweet. -

Just placed an order for my M15x. I'm so excited to get it in time for school.
Specs:
-Intel Core i7 740QM Quad Core Processor, 1.73GHz
-4GB of Memory
-15.6-inch Wide FHD 1920x1080 (1080p) WLED
-1GB ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5730
-320GB SATAII 7,200RPM
Not too sure how to video card is but it has to be better with what I'm gaming on now.
AMD Athlon 64x2 4400+ 2.30ghz, 4gb of ram, and the nvidia 9500GT.
Only thing that sucks is that the expected ship date is the 23rd. and ETA is the 31st. -
. I ordered mine 2 days ago, and my EDD is the 24th August. I hope you enjoy your new machine, I know I will.
-

If gaming is a primary concern, you would be better served by downgrading the processor to an i5-540 and using the savings to upgrade the video card to a 5850. Great system as configured, except that the 5730 will seriously impair gaming performance. -

Enjoy your new computer.
-
Thanks man, I hope I will, I remember being 13 years old and seeing Alienware computers. They looked so cool and were so fast, now I'm happy I'm finally getting one, if I'm happy with this one I'll be replacing my Desktop with one.
-
So, I got my bonus and decided to pick up the 5850 from dell. Just got off the phone and got my order placed
Quick question though, does it use the same heatsink as the 260? Because they didn't mention anything about the heatsink. -
