    Sweet, can't wait to get back into that series, hope the 260m can handle it. I know someone who bought a second hand xbox just for Fable 2, I shoulda pinched it off them for a while.

    nahh man i was kidding about the HAT i appreciate it what i really need is the display port to HDMI dongle but i have Tech Support sending me one overnight. You enjoy your setup and report back with everything and go crazy on the videos and benchmarking and tweaking. Try to spend time with your family in between all that or your GF might end up dumping you because of the ALIENWARE :twitchy:

    Warning, much bawwing below.

    Urgh! I got so [insert the f word here] today!
    I first tried to move my HD movie from my computer to my PS3, so I use my external HDD. But it wasnt working, I had to format my external HDD to fat32. So I think to myself, meh I can delete everything, I have it on my other HDD anyway. So I do it, I format my HDD in fat32, then I transfer all my movies back on it, the whole process took about 2 hours. (slow transfer is slow). So finally done, I try it on my PS3, IT DOESNT work!
    I don't understand, so I give up and just move my lappy close from my tv so I can plug it to the TV with a HDMI port.
    I try to find my movies by browsing my external HDD' but my computer doesnt recognize it. I don't get it.. i think to myself, meh another stoopid problem, lets reboot.
    in the process of rebooting I notice a weird screen, my lappy couldnt boot!
    After a dozen of try, I decide to pop in my Win7 installation CD, I just wanted to fix my boot problem, but it didnt work out! So I guessed I would just reinstall Win7 anyway, I needed a fresh install anyway!
    but while reinstalling I realize I still have a couple of files I don't have backed up (my documents, will all my school work and a LOT of personal documents). I then decided to simply reinstall windows but I kept my old files.
    After another hour, the process is over. I back up all my files quickly on my external HDD and I start a new windows installation because I wanted to do a REAL fresh install.
    So here I am on my new fresh install, running great but somehow my document folder I had backed up is empty.
    Its freakin empty O_O
    I just lost all my goddamn work I did in the last decade >___________________>.
    Now for my question, I have a backup file (done with windows) I did few weeks ago. I would like to know if I can use this backup file to restore my files? For now, my lappy doesnt recognize it...

    Argghh :( I lost everything :(

    all you can do is use data recovery software to try to get the sectors that have not been overwritten back. When i do data recovery i can get back like 50-60% data depends on how much you have already used since formatting since it is getting overwritten.

    If they just marked it shipped AND when you check tracking it doesn't show it as having been picked up yet, what that means is they generated the label/info for shipping (which also produces a tracking #), and then FedEx/UPS guy will pick it up tomorrow (Monday) and if it is next day business, it will be here Tuesday.

    Don't expect miracles but there is plenty of free software that will help you recover atleast some of your data so give it a shot if anything you will get some of your files which is more than what you have right now. You only have time to loose that it already lost the files. :eek:

    yes, but don't write any new stuff to the drive until you recovered your data. that will ensure the best chance possible to recover everything since it hasn't "overwritten" any of the old data.

    also (and this is important) you need to recover the data to a SEPERATE DRIVE.

    Dude that sucks soccer, Do not write anything new on that hdd. I had the same thing happen, I used "get data back" to recover most of my file. Probably easier to recover the external since its only been formatted, you hdd could be more difficult since its been over written with the new OS. But there is still a hood chance of recovery.

    Got my express card USB expansion today so my M15x now has 4 USB ports and an eSATA :) The only drawback is that the express card is ejected by pressing it in to release which means inserting a USB stick can eject the card :eek:

    u do realise that the esata is also doubles as a usb port so now technically you have 5 usb. Still, very nice! i like the fact that it doesn't stick out like others i've seen.

    Yep, know about the combo socket :) I just found that the express card does not lock into place and removing the USB stick can pull the card out without ejecting. So the card comes out easily when connecting and disconnecting devices :eek:

    That looks awesome! nice and slim! Might just pick one up exactly like it myself! Where did you buy it? and hwo much did it cost? also, is the card ejecting when you insert/remove a usb enough of a pain to not get it? i've never seen one so slim so i might just settle for the minor inconvenience ( if it is minor) and have it flush with my system :) . Now if only they made usb 3.0 ports that slim :( :( :( :( :(

    Yea technical support or customer service will eb able to help you. I Actually asked yesterday how much upgrading to 2 years EXTRA of Complete Advanced care would cost. They had told me to extend the regular warranty for another 2 years would cost ~230$ US, and to get Advanced Care would cost another ~420$US on top of that. So wer looking at around 650$ for another 2 years of complete care ( which would be like 3 years because one year almost already went buy since i bought my system :eek: .. ok ok more like 8 months but still! Damn time flies! Still feels like its a brand new toy :))

    Also, i called dell to report two bright pixels on my lcd, and within 5 mins the tech told me hes going to get that replaced no problem, without really looking into it? I was really surprized and happy because i noticed my lcd has small dot like scratches near the camera, presumably from being pressed up against the trackpad when being carried around in my bag? Apparently this is a common problem, and happens even if you are SUPER careful (Like i am). So this time around im ordering a lcd screen protector to make sure that doesn't happen.

    Also, funny story. I told the same tech that one of the little rubber feet fell off yesterday ( the ones the lcd rests on while closed) and that i couldn't find it anymore, and would like to know if he can send me sum extras, which i'f even gladly pay for. He told me dell doesn't offer them alone but they come with the whole palm rest. I asked him how much that would cost, he put me on hold, and when he came back he told me he would make an exception this time, and replace my whole palm rest free of charge. ALL because of a little rubber footpad gone missing LOL. I don't know i found this funny, and a waste but hey, i'm not complaining.

    I'm starting to think Dell has a Memo goign around saying "Give this Customer Whatever he wishes" loll. Don't mean to brag, but Dell had been REALLY REALLY generous to me so far :) . This is one of th emain reasons I'm pretty sure i'm going to get the extended warranty, as it's absolutely worth it. HEck even the basic 1yr has gotten me :

    A 5870m upgrade from the 260m FREE
    A 9cell battery upgrade form the 6cell FREE
    A new CPU Fan
    A new LCd
    A new Palm Rest

    I'm starting to wonder now just how much i can juice this warranty of mine :p

    A

    Got it off eBay USA for $7.50. I can see one going for $8 or a different brand going for a nice 'n evil $6.66 :) I don't swap devices that often and it's not loose enough to fall out so I'd say it's worth having. Also once reconnected it detects and become useable almost instantly (before I can reach the mouse) so the's no down time.

    Edit: I should also mention it comes with a cable that lets you get more power from another USB port. I don't know what it's limitations are but my G13 keyboard with back lit keys and display pannel works fine without extra power. It specifies USB Bus Power: (w/o Adapter) +5V, 100mA per port, (w/ Adapter) +5V, 500mA per port.

    im starting to wonder how much dell actually profits from a single M15x.

    I have had the following done:

    * Motherboard replacement
    * LCD replacement
    * graphic card replacement (another 260m :( )
    * optical drive wiull be replaced
    * palm rest replacement
    * AC adapter replacement
    * bottom service cover replacement

    Additionally, the LCD, Mobo, gfx card and optical drive requires a tech, each taking about 1 hour. 1 hour of labour in switzerland is really expensive, you are looking at at least $200-300. So if you sum it up, there doesnt seem to be much room for profit.

    Im still out for the ATI 5850 and I will not give up on that. I have a callback for tomorrow morning arranged where I can talk to a supervisor

    They told me yesterday that i can. But you have to first buy the Standard warranty, before adding on the complete care. :)

    @ Wattos:

    Yea i know must cost them a crap load. But then again Dell is HUGE, so they must have resources to do so :). I mean, only a small percentage of consumers know enough about computers, and are willing to take advanatge of their warranty. My father for one, never bothers with warrantys. He goes by the modo, if it breaks, get a new one. I'm not as fortunate as he and value my hard earned money. lol

    Quick question though. As a tech shoul dbe coming over tonight or tomorrow night... what is required to change the palm rest? Is it quick to replace? haven't really looked into it yet, but i hope they dont got to rip out too much to get to it, mostly because no Dell rep is touching my machine, and i'm going to be doing the replacement myself.

    The lcd i know is easy an fairly quick to swap luckily :)

    Removing and replacing the palm rest is, literally, a 10 min job if that.

    Battery out, cover off, two screws, slide palm rest forward lift, detach cable.

    The service manuals routinely have steps included that just aren't needed sometimes.

    lol, this is true. :) The cable has a kink in it that is a pain. As always, a pair of needle nose pliers made it insanely easy. Love these things. ;)

    Lighter weight? Streamlined look?

    Personally, I like the 9-cell this go around. Gives the unit a nice, little lift in the rear. My original 920xm+260M had the 6-cell.

    Greetings friends!

    I have returned from the abyss (WoW)... What's cracking? I'm going to order a 5850 next week after I move to british columbia for school, been reading inap's postings just raving about how much of a beast his is. One question I have for inap again is what type of thermal compound you recomended to me in the past. I had it on my old hard drive before I made the switch to SSD and just can't remember the name. Going to order some for when the tech replaces the GPU.

    Really enjoying my SSD, the faster load times are insane but to be honest I can't remember how long the older drive took to load up programs etc so you adjust pretty quickly once you do make the switch.

    EDIT: I had a really sick custom rainbow AlienFX them on my old drive which I can't seem to replicate. Could I just plop in my old drive for the few mins it takes me to host it online then easily go back to my SSD? IT's bugging me knowing the sick theme is on the old drive :D
