This is no-fair, I want an unlimited budget too! -
The people with the unlimited budget are paying of the research investment on the newest equipment which makes it cheaper for the rest of us 12months later.. I'm happy with that
-
how about keep everything the same. the people who mod to the 5870 'are' there own club because they paid good money and used valuable labor to get that graphics card into their M15x. nuf said

Hey All,
Did anyone ever figure out a way to auto switch the sound to display port when plug in detected?
Would be nice to not have to always switch my sound back and forth when i plug the cable in. -
Wth.. my strip across the top (with the volume/stealth etc) and the alienware head power button stopped lighting up
-
-
Thanks
Was just trying that and it worked.. So random and strange
-
damn harry you're quick -
I had to reinstall the AlienFX Command Center because the alienhead logos kept shutting off or staying a different color. (rep's solution)
So far since yesterday i've had no issues. -

Hey Guys
1 more question. For wireless N (not sure if this is an issue with router or WIFI card)
I had to set my band for 2.4 and 5.2 to 20Mhz only. Which limits the speed to 130Mbps. Which isn't bad
But in order to get the full speed of Wireless N i need to have it on auto. But when i do this after a few minutes i start to get packet loss. If i turn disable/enable the device it will work again (for a few min again)
I have been ok with just leaving it at 20MHz since its pretty fast but thought I'd ask now that its been a few months and there might be more info out there -
do you have the intel 5300 or dell 1520
-

I just wanted to say that HarryTheFish is one great person.
I won't delve too much here but let's just say he has a heart of gold.
Again, I can't thank you enough and may you receive the same kindness you have shown me.

sounds like he did something above and beyond the call of duty
-
okayyy, the wait is killing meee.
i called dell yesterday, one of the operator said that it was supposed to be delivered at 540pm yesterday, got me all stoked about it. i called to double check as i din get any calls from the courier guys and another operator told me it was just getting ready for shipment from the factory, confused.. so i emailed the sales rep that i got the system from, he told me its otw to the local courier service and i'll get it next week. online order status says its arrived in main hub. Sooo i guess the sales rep is right?
EDD changed from 17 May to 12 May tho.
So excited, i got the razer mamba, cs source and bad company 2. just waiting to load it up when the beast is here.. Thinking of getting a headset for gaming and music. hmm razer megalodon? have any of you tried it?
have a great weekend guys! -
-
Speaking of waits, sounds like it'll be mid-next week before I get a tech out to replace my motherboard. It's really too bad things are going like this, my first impressions were fantastic.
-
Now go and enjoy your weekend!!!! -
Ok I am new here to this forum. I have found you guys on a google search because I am having issues with my Area 51 m15x laptop. I bought back in 2008 in November and received it in December. I hardly used up until last year more school and djing.
This week I upgraded to Windows 7 32-bit, well...lets say I was having issues with the some of the features of the systems. So I restored it back to the orginal OS Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit from the restore disc. Once again I was gaving issues with the lighting on the keyboard, the name, touch pad etc.
At this point, I have the all the lighting back on but the touchpad light will not turn on when there is a mouse plugged in, I had no problems before with this until now, when I press FN+F12 the touchpad light doesnt come on like it should. Plus some of the updates are not installing for Windows. Updates as follow,
1) Security update for Windows Vista (KB967723)
2) Update for Windows Vista (KB972145)
3) Update for Windows Vista (KB979306)
it will consistantly tell me I have updates and they wont installed.
here is what I dont understand, I called up Alienware support and ask them if they support Windows 7 32-bit they said no but they support the 64-bit version, ok fine. When I ask if I buy a copy of the Windows 7 64-bit from the store and if I have any issues with the install would they help out, they told me no they will not support it if I buy it from a third party. I would have to buy the copy from them and they will support it. Now answer me this, "what makes thier copy special from the store bought one if it is made buy the same company, Microsoft?"
Any suggestions here with my issue.
P.S my webcam only show the Youcam driver and not the Alienware driver?
Thanks -
I am not familiar with the Area 51 m15x as this is the All Powerful M15x forum, but I do know how to switch the light of the touchpad back on. Go to Command Center, choose Touch and uncheck the Deactivate when mouse is connected option.
As far as the Windows copy is concerned, they just want to sell as much as possible, because those people work on commission basis.
Good luck with it. -
Thanks HTF, the area 51 is the same as the m15x according to them and according to the specs I got from alienware. I do have the m15x, they called it the Area 51 m15x, go figure!!!
Do you guys know why the Windows Update can not install the 3 updates I listed? -
ok this simply means... unfortunately... windows didn't install properly...and you should do a clean install...i had this issue once on one of my older pc's that i was trying to upgrade from xp to vista 32bit and apparently it was a problem with the Component Based Servicing (CBS) manifest that causes this... Support told me to do a windows Repair... you can try that... but it didnt work for me... so i did a clean install and all was well.
also... if you bought your laptop in '08 then it most liekly is an Area 51 m15x.... which is not the same as the newer Alienware M15x ( they dropped the Area 51 and made the "m" capital) -
Really strange that it won't install the updates. Have you checked if they, by any chance, have already been installed. Windows update sometimes "forgets" that.
-
Well not yet, but I will. Thanks for all the help so far on this. If I run to any other issues I will let you guys know.
Ok, call stupid, call a air head lol, but I seen two entries in my Local (Ctwo folders called: Windows.old amd Windows.old.000.
Any clue what these are? Are they safe to delete? what should I do with them? -
They contain all the old folders from before you tried updating the OS. They're might be very useful things in there actually, that you had on your computer before.
-
also it seems like you have the older area 51 model, you must do alot of tweaking if you want all the alienware stuff to work.
also try these drivers for you model:
http://4help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/...F90ZXh0PW0xNXggd2luZG93cyA3&p_li=&p_topview=1
and also do a search on the furom, there should be a thread or two about your model and win 7.
ok found the thread link for you:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/424159-windows-7-64-bit-drivers-m15x-not-m15x.html
also alienware uses youcam for their cam drivers. -
currently talking with a dell tech on the phone... Hopefully my alienfx system will be fixed soon..
Boy does it look boring without the lights -
yeah the lighting is one of the best parts on a alienware. hope they get it up and running soon bro. also i suggest going through the service manual just incase you get some nooby tech, so at least you can do it yourself.
-
Ok, question, which of there two would be the orignal file that was on the laptop before the upgrade happen, Windows.old or Windows.old.000?
Two, cant I copy the folders over to reset my setting back to where they should be? Meaning taking that that whole folder, example Windows.old and coping it into the current folder or into the c: drive?
I never encountered this issue before, all I use to do is wipe it all clean by doing a low level format and starting all over again, but I am trying not to do that if I dont have too. Also, if I buy a version of Windows 7 64-bit OS from the store, are there drivers to support to get the m15x or in my case the Area-51 m15x back to normal (all the setting for the command center, lighting etc).
Just curious here and like to know.
You guys have been a great deal of wt this point and I thank you all much. -
hmm not quite sure, as i've never used that feature so check both. Taking shortcuts (or following the **recommended** option when upgrading to windows 7...nice one microsoft) , like not doing a full system reformat and fresh install has been known to cause all kinds of issues. Sure its quicker to take that route, but in the long run.. as you're now encountering.. it'll always run a little buggy..with weird things happening every now and then...
If you need stuff in those folders....just load them on a portable harddrive or something...and reformat you hdd, then install windows 7 from scratch. That should get rid of all the problems you're encountering.
about the drivers for the m15x.... i'm not a 100% sure, and i don't want to misinform you... but i'm **pretty** sure members on these forums have got everything working right with a little work... so you should be fine.. bu tthen again.. im not too sure as i never owned an area 51 m15x system myself so... -
i posted a few links for you in the last page. i highly recommend reformating and reinstalling window 7. use the drivers provided in the links. any win 7 64 bit will work but you will need all the driver listed in the link to get cc and fx working
dang J quick on the draw bro, lol. -
Wowthanks for all the info for Win 7 64-bit.
Sorry but I will not pay the money to Alienware/Dell for Win 7 64. I know it is cheaper out there and as I am concern, it is still a Microsoft product and there is nothing special from Alienware/Dell. They just want to sell, like you guys said.
Thanks again!! -
here in the M15x owners thread... we take care
especially Inap ^^^^ ... he's friggin awesome as you'll soon learn to know -
hahaha thanks J, but all members here are extremely helpful. its a very awesome community we have in this forum, especially with M15x owners. you guys are awesome, love this place.
-
dude this is the best tech support you could ever get even better than what aw/dell could do
-
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
Much better than what alienware tech team can provide.......... and inap's awesome.... he's always there!!! for everyone....
-
Too bad we can't supply parts too huh...hmm

Ok go figure this one out, I couldnt just leave my m15x alone after all the crap I been through trying to getting back to normal as much as possible. I had three updates that wouldnt install, KB972145, KB979306 and KB967723. So I decided to go to Microsft website and try to install them seperately, lo and behold, they all installed. I guess it had to go through the Genuine Validation process for two of them KB972145 and KB979306 and third one went in fine. So, the windows update screen cleared all the updates it said I need and wouldnt install.
Go figure this out. So after this I dont even know what else I will come across to next but I am sure I will not be at ease till I figure it out. As for my Touch pad issue, the solution did work but it goes back to the default setting and I have to go in to the command center and disable to where as before it wold do it automatically and I could turn on the light by pressing FN+F12 and the light comes and the touchh pad is still disable when a mouse is plugged in.
So to all thanks for everything so far and I hope this helps. -
Hello guys,
I tried for getting M15x with 3 year warranty support but they denied i tried everything possible they want me to pay 300$ to get 3year warranty and i'm just short.
Well guys what would you recommend should i go with the purchase?
I live in KSA but i'm buying Alienware M15x from USA and my friend in USA will send me the package here. What i am really worried is about warranty as so many people reported so many issues with M15x, mobo and other hardware failures. Well, i have dell service centers in my city but i will be having 1 year warranty so that will be only valid in US. What should i do? -
$300 for 3 yrs international warranty is a pretty good price imo. either save up a few more hundos to get it or keep trying to call and maybe get lucky and find a rep that is willing to gave you a discount. warranty is a must have for these top end systems.

Hey guys anyone else have this issue. My GPU temp appears to sit at about 65-71 C when idle. If i game it can reach reach up to 90C
Is that normal? for the M15x.
I do have the riva tuner throttle fix in place but still appear to get heavy throttle (assuming it might be the heat?)
Never seen the GPU load go over 50%
(anyway to keep my laptop cooler?)
