lol all's well that ends well i guess.
fast time period for a gpu replacement good to know dell can be reliable like that
also a ssd is a good upgrade makes it go supa fast
-
so im wondering since there is speculation on a new bios what if anything important will be changed?
-
-
So, the tech came this morning and replaced the DVD drive. Man, don't ever mess your drive, it's the most complicated thing to replace in the M15x! I took a pic that I will post later. He had to take my whole baby apart and then take the bracket of the old drive in order to mount the new one! Works like a dream, though!
-
nice to hear everything is working for you harry, yeah dvd drive is a real pain and your right its the hardest part to replace.
-
My baby is back!!!! -
Does anyone know of a driver for the Alienware Integrated Webcam? I had it twice on there and now I cant seem to get it back plus I had when I first got the m15x/Area-51 m15x. I had a choice of two cams, Alienware and YouCam, which youcam gets on my nerves.
Any suggestions. -
let windows install the default driver for your cam, otherwise its just youcam.
-
The tech from dell called me today. He will come on friday... Shucks, but thats better than nothing!
Also I meant thats what I WANT in my earlier post.
I will either buy two screens or buy one 23'' LED monitor. Both should cost about 375-400$ -
Ok thanks.
-
seeing that screen setup makes me want to get a desktop, lol to bad i don't have room for one.
-
You should look in the computer room thread WaR's set up , its gorgeous =D
-
As far as I am concerned, the screen of the M15x is both big and beautiful enough. Besides, I would constantly be looking where my work files are (weren't they just on screen 3?).
-
Hehe, yeah well i would use only two. One for main work and one for forums and all
-
So how did school go today, Thierry? What are you studying if I may ask? -
looks like sleey0 is still selling his M15x, man sad to see him lose that. atleast let me beat your score before you sell it, man so close.
-
-
yeah i saw a post in the M15x+5870 thread. i feel for him too, going through some rough times but i'm sure he'll be back and probably with something better.
-
Hopefully it won't take long!
Here are the 2 pics I took this morning when the tech was here:
My poor little naked baby! The drive is actually taken out from the front, meaning you have to take out the keyboard and palmrest and then just about everything else (this info just for other noobs like me). -
wow awesome pics harry, man that tech looks great, even labeled the screws and everything.
-
Yeah, he's a real pro. He leaves no room for mistakes, apologizes upfront for smudges which he cleans up afterwards anyway. If I ever decide to put in the 5870 (just for fun cause I really don't need it), he's gonna put it in for me.
It's a shame they're so damn expensive over here. It would be fun just to do some benching with the big people. -
yeah i don't really recommend a 5870 for the average guy, because you have to monitor your temps closely because those bad boys runs hot, i think the 260m would be a perfecr fit for you harry, handle most games nicely and the temps are awesome.
-
As far as being careful goes, there's nothing to worry. I always keep an eye on things that might go wrong. Even now when I run Vantage I monitor temps even though the card never goes over 56°C.
The thing about the 260 card is that I can't get it on the island, only ATI cards are freely available. Unfortunately I haven't seen a 5850 card yet but I'll be on the lookout! It must be more fun pushing your system to the limit than just work on it like I do!
Besides, If I had $700 to spare I would rather send them to Sleey0 so he could keep his lappy or to Thierry so he could get that wicked curved Alienware screen! -
hahah yup thats true, i just spent the last 2 days benching the crap out of my lappy. with the 5870 the M15x truely becomes a beast of a laptop.
got top spot on some of the benches, really want to break that 10k mark. -

I'm still in high school (or the equivalent in Quebec..) next year I'm gonna study pure and applied science, and I'm planning on going for computer science, civil engineering or something related to computer engineering
The M15x really did help me to find a passion in which I will eventually study to make a profession. Seriously! I was thinking about going in business and all, but my new lappy made me realized how much time I can spend lurking around on forums just to know better about computers and all.
Plus engineering offers great salary
what about you Harry, what is/was your day job? I'm curious! -
-
Hi Thierry,
Great that you have something in mind that you like.
I myself am a chemical engineer with a post grade in fossil fuels. loads of money in that but boring as hell! So I quit doing that after 8 months and decided that was the last time I would work for someone else. I went to Margarita Island and started a language school. Worked as language teacher and course developer for 15 years and started working as a translator. Poor as a church rat but happy as can be!!!
Man, if I could just do it all over again! (I wouldn't change a thing, except I wouldn't have gone to university :_)) -

think 85 should be alright... any new achievements in lowering down the temperatures or any new projects in the que...
and ya harry your my hero as well.. -
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
where is J... missin him man...
-
yeah he's out there somewhere drunk off his bum by now, lol.
-
Being a translator is perfect. You decide when you work, how hard you work or if you work at all. Once I get the money in that pays all the bills for the month, I stop working for a while and spend my time with my family.
I know, not a dream for most people, but hell, it's my way of life, and to speak with McD: "I'm lovin' it!" -
-
I reckon that 60 pack he was telling me about the other day became a 60-pack or something! -
Ahah, yeah I feel you, fossil fuel and all that sounds quite boring..
But wow, that's great, a language school huh?
So you must be one of these super intelligent dude that can speak about 40 languages?
Oh, and you're my hero as well then -
Ha ha ha! No, just 14 and some of them are getting a bit rusty! Doesn't matter though. I speak the ones I need and that's enough!
-
just 14 languages, geez i'm still having trouble with my english....
-
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
14 languages... awesome man...
-
14...I can't even speak 1 right LOL
-
-
Ha ha ha! Languages are overrated, man. You only need to be able to communicate whatever you want. Everything else is just a waste of time and effort.
-
14? Wow!
I speak two properly (french and english) and I can barely talk in spanish...
Is there anyway I can donate to your school or anything!? :O I'd be glad to help in anyway! -
Besides, almost all of you dominate programming languages, which are are a lot more difficult than normal languages! -
Wow, 14 is very high!! I know a few people who speak 5 or 6 but 14 is awesome!!
You must have your pick of the good jobs
Respect!!
Actually, I know what you mean.. i started out learning basic assembly etc and learning dutch and spanish was made easier because I could grasp structure fast.. Having said that they are rich with mental shapes and character that you just don't get in computer-logic languages.
It's pretty much the same whatever you are learning, once you get the hang of a variety of things, everything else becomes easier.. -
On a seperate note, I think I broke the 260M Vantage record (there's only one score there to beat, so I'm not exactly jumping up and down with joy)
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ial-m15x-benchmark-thread-38.html#post6240419 -
ure, you could come over and give French lessons!
-
-
That would be a honor for me!
I'll start keeping money so I can afford a plane ticket to your paradise 8D -
The ATi 5850 is a £10 upgrade over the GT240, compared to the £60 for the GTX260M. I'm still in the 30 day period, so I can still send it back and re-order, but is there a way to get dell to install it for me without sending it back and having to reorder?
-
Actually, it's a 21-day period. If you're still in it, go for it!
No, they'll have to have to lappy to install it. Otherwise you will have to order the piece and swap it yourself, but in that case you will have to pay apart for it. They won't take your card back.
