Welcome to the forum and congrats for your new laptop!

Lol, yeah the 5870 runs very hot, but if you have a decent set up it should not overheat, as long as you don't overclock it too much!
Although if you are able to get a laptop cooler, it would definably be a plus!

Hey everybody, new update: No update. Technicians on the phone tell me they'll just send out another tech to replace my motherboard (still less than 3 weeks since I received the system)! Dell has failed to respond to my "Unresolved Issues" emails. Is this a lost cause? I really felt that this would be the best computer I've ever had, and it's been nothing but a nightmare :(

Give it time, They will almost never REPLACE a system on the first repair attempt no matter how you complain about it not being perfect out of the box. If this new motherboard replacement doesn't resolve your issue. Let them make another attempt at fixing it another way. If that is inconvenient for you make sure you let them know and speak to their supervisor. Eventually they will concede and replace the system (if the necessary attempts to repair are made).

If your still within your return period you have the advantage of asking for a refund and just trying again with a new system.

Be firm with them and let them know that you NEED a working computer and you EXPECT a working premium class computer.

If it requires a replacement they will do it.

I guess I'll just see if I can return it then. There's no point in having a computer that doesn't function properly.

yeah i would return right away, don't wait to long. but i'm sure they are willing to replace it, if you ask nicely. just say if you don't get a replacement then you will return it anyways, normally after hearing that they will replace it for you. you have all the power right now. also may as well order a new one since the new cards are out. just make sure to call customer support this time, technical support really suck when you are trying get a replacement or refund. as long as you have a case opened already then call customer support.

No need to apologize, bro. It's still the owners talking. I don't see a problem with that. Once in a while people get bored, that's all.

@ hitokiri1 Good to see the heatsink is the same. That will put some people's mind at ease! I'm sure we're all real curious how the card holds up. Let us know, will you?

Quick question, is it possible to have the LED's on the keyboard to turn off after a certain amount of time like other laptops? on the 1640 sxps series you can set it through quickset, on Asus laptops you can set it through their tools. Does the M15x allow you to do so?

Yeah, I can imagine. I was actually surprised the first time I read that given that so many people have already put in the 5870 using the 240 or 260 heatsink.

So, in true DELL fashion I call in to get some info on the dispatch number that was sent to me, (reference numbers for the company that does teh installations) and the alienware rep on the phone lets me know that the 260GTX was sent out according to the dispatch.

So once again I'm not sure what to say.

Jeez! So again the waiting game is on!
Man, I wish Dell would talk clear language for once and for all!

BTW - Where did Inap's post go?

On another note, my WEI score always used to be quite good but all of a sudden my graphics scores dropped to 3.9 and 4.9. Could that be the result of the DVD drive replacement?

Hi Smeggit, thanks for your input. I never really use that whole touch strip, so I don't think I've touched it. It's off now. The rest of the scores were normal as well.
I'll just try again tomorrow and see what's going on.

there is no time setting for the fx there is only the fn+f11 to manual turn on and off.

wow thats wierd, so now they are confirming that they are sending you a 260? hopefully its a mistake.

sorry wasn't there for harry, like smeggit said it either stealth or a wei glitch but i think everything should be fine when you reboot. my earlier post was taken off since it was not "owners lounge" related.

awesome setup bro, thats enough for anything you throw at it, if your in the US try dell epp normally its 10% cheaper and with a little haggling i'm sure you can alittle more of a discount. also i highly recommend getting a after market ssd, i use photoshop everyday and i must say that it greatly improves the overall performance, especially opening and saving big files.

hope you get it soon and welcome to the M15x family.

Yup, they tried to re-order the part but the guy i was talking to wasn't too swift and couldn't order it. They are now in the process of trying to figure out whats going on. Also the guy forced me to wait till tomorrow because his shift was over and he couldn't pass me over to someone else.

So now I wait on them to call me back. Which I will probably not do because i'm infinitely impatient. :D

SSD are very expensive, though dell's SSD are not the best.
The best thing to do is to buy the 250gb HDD, and swap it with an Intel G2 or a OCZ drive! These are flying fast!

What would be a good 160gb ssd that does´nt cost too much, if there is one that will say :p?

3 repair visits( changed HD, MB, ram, etc) , 1 replaced power adapter. Still horrible problems. What is the best way to go about getting a replacement with complete care? They just keep denying anything and giving possible solutions with repair visits. Wasn't there a group that customers would complain to and they'd help make sure dell was doing their job or something? I need some help on getting a new working system for my friend here. All that money for a full coverage warranty for 4 years and they aren't even budging. Hell, she's supposed to have a rep in NA too but it's always a foreign one that no one can understand. If anyone has complete care and has talked to a NA rep please PM me the number or how you got to talk to one.

Yeah you should be okay with the regular hdd. I only recommended it since I saw you using Photoshop. But once you use an ssd all other hdd will feel super slow. I consider it the best upgrade option for any system.

    100% agree

Once you go to an SSD, a HDD just feels like your OS is downloading from the internet or something..

Just one thing left to point out. If you've never had one, just stick to the HDD for now and buy one when the prices come down.

It's cool if you have the spare cash but better to wait, that way in a year you can spend a few hundred and upgrade your lovely machine to a whole fresh new level.

In general with these situations you need to mention the words "legal action" and tell them you want a case manager. You have paid for the top package and need to get this dealt with by someone who has the authority.

You can sue them if they don't react. Record every conversation, take the names of the people you are speaking to and NEVER show any weakness or anger. Be patient and open but make sure you get through to the bosses, and then their bosses, and so on!

Tech came today and replaced my motherboard. Seemed like he knew what he was doing. Didn't realize the whole laptop had to be taken apart to do it but it was over and done with in 1 1/2 hours. Diagnostic Test runs the way it should now and I am a happy camper.

May sound petty to some that I was having no problems with the machine other than running this test but since Dell has you run this when you call with a problem better this is fixed now than later.
