    Nice to hear Harry!

What anti-virus do you guys use? I was thinking about order kaspersky from costco, really cheap there.

Edit: Oh the good price was for the anti-virus only, was looking at the Internet security.

I got my key for Kaspersky internet suite 2010 cheap off eBay (3pc-2year for $13). I just had a look now and didn't see any good deals but it's worth keeping an eye out them.

Sure does, but with such a powerful machine you wont really notice it! It will probably add a few seconds on your boot time though!

It just so happens that I've done a clean install recently and did a few benchmarks. I just ran another one now with everything except Kaspersky shut down and the difference was very small.

    Stock:
    GPU - 4955
    CPU - 12420

    With Kaspersky running:
    GPU - 4891
    CPU - 12379

To give it a bit of perspective if you're not familiar with the numbers: the average FPS in the GPU tests dropped from 14.51 to 14.33.

As for anti-virus, I'm using Norton gaming edition - came with the system - which works very well. I's very, very light and in addition has a gaming mode where it won't bother you while gaming.

I use ESET smart security and things couldn't have been better. Have been using it for close to 5 yrs now and no infections yet.

on a side note, called tech support yesterday and asked them if I could swap my prev HDD onto my new system (system exchange). They bluntly said no - gave a lame reason saying that the windows is pre-activated and configured to specific components only. I give him the finger and swapped the HDD anyway :D. Things went smoothly but AlienFX started acting weird. I factory restored windows 7 and everything was fine

BTW that guy had the audacity to tell me that I cannot use the factory restore image on my previous HDD to restore windows 7 as it would void the warranty... BS.

I've had a go at fixing the sound coming from the M15x (as in, I did not find it's quality satisfactory). The fact that the output is underpowered compared to my computer (and strangely, my phone) made it harder to compare, but I think I've got a better mix of bass and treble now (despite the bass becoming a little underwhelming). Also, the highs don't try to blend into one (e.g. crash from the cymbals).

Which means that I'm nearly there in terms of completely replacing my desktop. All that remains is to get the external enclosure delivered so I can use my desktops hard drive with my Alienware (The hard drive is probably the most expensive part at £75. It was bought two years ago for £320, so it's not even worth selling, but saying that, it has served me well). Then I'll be all set for Uni.

BTW I decided to run the bench again including CPU-Z and GPU-Z in the benchmark thread so people have a reference.

i wouldn't say its useless, but its not really a gamers card. but those numbers seem about right for that card. but still the 240 can still max out a few games, especially valve games.

hahah yeah last night was pretty fun, well at least the parts i remember, hahahha. yeah don't worry about the 240 its a good card to start, when you start getting serious into gaming then consider a new card.

Ha ha ha! We'll see how serious it gets, bro! Cards are very expensive here. The 5870 is between $600 and $700 and then you have to put it in yourself.

I might check the local specialists to see what they have to offer (I kinda like benching but have to learn a lot about oc'ing and all that stuff). SSD's are more affordable here but I don't see a need for that as I do everything from a memory card (Chrome, Firefox, Thunderbird, Skype, Microsoft Office, translation software, etc. are all run from a card). I only run windows 7 and the things I downloaded for the lappie, gpu-z, cpu-z, hwinfomonitor32, 3dmarkAdvantage, 3dmark06 and the games I downloaded from Steam from the HDD. I don't think an SSD would bring me much advantage.

wow 600-700 that expensive, i think its cheaper just to order from baby hemi and get it shipped, hahahah
how cheap are the ssd's there???? you can be surprised by how much of a performance boost you get from an ssd.

SSD's are between $200 and $700. Depending on what you want. But they're cheaper than in the States. They're not too widely available, though. That's a bit of a shame but I've got a good address for 'em.

how easy is it to change the DVD drive on the M15X. my replacement system came with a LG drive and it makes my whole system vibrate like crazy. I was thinking of swapping it with the TSST drive of my prev M15x

i think theres a step by step guide to swapping the dvd drive out for a hdd caddy. you could look at that its the same thing, you have to completely disassemble the laptop i think.

LoL, sadly for me the speed test is a joke. I'm on a "managed" data plan which means I get unlimited downloads but for most of the day my speed is throttled. Of course they put no limits on the speed test so I get a good score but when downloading I get about 30 to 150kbps.

Man, I hate to tell you this, but the DVD drive is by far the hardest part of the system to replace. Front and cover have to be removed, all visible components have to be removed, then the drive has to be removed (at this point you all find out that really all visible components have to be removed). After you have finally managed to pry out the drive you're in for another surprise. When you take you shiny new drive you will notice it came without a bracket. You will have to take the bracket off the old drive and mount it on your new drive. Then everything has to be put back.

Sorry to be the bearer of the news vzxyz. They had to replace my drive and it wasn't a pretty sight. I posted some pics somewhere in this thread.

    Good luck with it man!
