Hi guys. This may have been answered somewhere but can people let me know regarding the problem with the fans going full blast at boot up from cold and staying on rather than the normal short blast, has this been fixed? I still get it on the odd occasion. Is it some setting in the BIOS that needs changing?

    Cheers!

its a glitch, normally a reboot will fix it. but if you find it happening often, then contact dell about, because no real fix for it yet.

A05 came installed with this as I only got it last month.
I personally think replacing the mobo is a waste of time. it's gotta be software rather than hardware surely?

Oh man that issue is damn annoying. Out of like 5 boots, one will get stuck lol. I'll have to restart since for some reason my CPU is cool but my GPU is warmer than usual...

Well at the moment, I'm in talks to move up to the M17x, but if it doesn't happen then i'm sticking around here :p.

Basically when i was given the option to exchange out of the 1645 SXPS i went with the M15x on the advice of the technician. However after loosing some real estate (16") to the 15.6" and the RGBLED i'm inquiring about moving up to the 17x.

So far its promising however Alienware is making go through hoops to get in touch with a supervisor so by tomorrow i'll know where I stand :D

Either way if it doesn't happen i'll be quite content with my M15x/5850. But if it doesn't I don't think i can say no to a 5870 or possibly x2.

Hey everyone, been lurking on this site for awhile and figured that I'd sign up since my M15x arrived a few days ago!

If anyone could point me in the direction of posts/guides/threads detailing CPU and GPU upgrading I would be grateful. I was unable to get the CPU I wanted due to my location (Dell doesn't offer the i7-620M in Canada, so I had to get the i5-540M) and I'm hoping to find a detailed guide (preferably with pictures) that I can look at to swap out my i5 with the i7 when I purchase it.

On that note, where would you recommend I purchase an i7-620M processor? I don't know of any big-name retailers that can get mobile processors...

Also, I was wondering, would the M15x be able to accommodate an Nvidia GTX 285M if I purchased it? From what I can tell it should be compatible?

Don't want to shatter your hopes, but I can't see them giving you a dual gpu setup when your SXPS was single. But at the very least you'll get the RGB LED and a single 5870, which is amazing as it is with the option of upgrading down the line.

If you're gunna swap the CPU out, get an i3 if it's offered and then put an i7 in afterwards. unless they use a different socket in that case that's my bad.

I already have it with the i5-540M, and I don't plan to upgrade the CPU until my years worth of warranty runs out.

Are there any reputable retailers for OEM mobile processors and graphics cards? Or is eBay my only hope? Eventually I plan to upgrade it to the i7-620M, GTX 285M, and 8GB 1066MHz RAM... If SSD prices come down to reasonable levels at the 50)GB range by then I'll get one of those as well.

Just for the record I have been having this same problem (a few times a week). Didn't have this problem until I had my motherboard replaced a couple weeks ago with another problem. I have been told that there will be problems with this motherboard until it get's a firmware update. Can this be true????

Well, Alienware is being extremely difficult just getting them to exchange it for the 17" model the process for exchanges takes much more "reviewing" than is necessary by the SXPS department. So we'll see how this progresses. I should know something more by the end of the day or tomorrow.

On a side note still nothing on the 5850 upgrade front, (because even if they aren't able to exchange my system I do want the 5850 installed if they ever figure out how to send it out).

bummer man, but i'm sure after a week or 2 you'll forget about it. also don't feel bad about the 260m bro, still a good card. also you can just upgrade your video card when you feel the 260 is no longer enough.

Good afternoon Mr. Pras. A noob question for you. What is the best way of installing these drivers? Download, uninstall the previous drivers and install the new ones. Or don't the old ones have to be uninstalled? Or would it be better to uninstall the old drivers, run Ccleaner and then install the new drivers?

    Thanks for your response!

    Met vriendelijke groet,

    Harry

Edit: I'll just take the safe road and choose the last option.

Well, I installed the drivers after running Ccleaner and rebooting, but I think had already reinstalled the other drivers. What do I do?

Also my camera is now on and cannot be switched off.

All right, the good ol' draining trick got rid of the camera glitch!

Don't know Inap. I uninstalled the drivers, ran Ccleaner and rebooted. Then I wanted to install the new drivers but in the meantime Windows was already installing Nvidia drivers. I still installed the new ones but I don't know which are running now.

don't worry about it harry, thats normal. after uninstalling windows will always install a generic driver for your card. use gpuz to see the current driver.

So am I running the new drivers now? Where can I check that?

All right, so I am currently running the new drivers. Thanks, Inap!

A bit worried about my CPU temps, though. They seem to have shot up from 30-41°C to 56-60°C on idle.

Hi, Inap. I just ran 3dmark06 and the temps did not go over 74°C, so it's no problem. I'll upload the results to imageschack and then post them. GPU came out better than with the older drivers.

Here's the result. I'll post it in the benchmark thread as well.

by normal, i mean no oc'ing. gaming and everything is fine with no cooler. M15x is a cooling beast. only when oc'ing you will get higher temp, but even then the temp are all acceptable. keep the cooler if you plan on doing alot of benchmarking, otherwise sell it.
