man sounds awesome soccer, live it up bro.

harry the 285m is a great card, and for $300 thats an awesome deal. gaming performance will be lower than 5870 but for everything else its far superior with cuda and physX.

That actually sounds nice! It doesn't have to perform as well as the 5870 because I just don't want to spend 600 - 700 bucks on a card, which is what the ATI costs here. I think I might just go for the 285 then! Is it difficult swapping them?

BTW - Have fun at the parties, bro! I have been in bed sick the last couple of days, so I kinda feel like a little party myself! ;)

swapping really isn't that hard, the hard part is getting the thermal compound and pads right. that part can take multiple tries to get the best temps possible. but getting to the card itself is real easy.

Lol, the i7 740QM is available now and I'm about to receive my M15X in the next day or two that has the 720QM. :p

I just went to Notebook Check and the benchmarks are showing only a 5% gain in performance.

That's what I've been reading. In a way I'm glad I went with the 720QM, as it should be a vast improvement over the C2D (T9400) I was using in my XPS 1640, not to mention the massive difference compared to my M11X R1. :D

Hi just wondering if anyone else has had this issue with a blank screen on starting up on battery. I usually have mine wired for power but have noticed recently it's frequently just giving me a blank screen on battery. If I plug in a live power cord then the screen lights up. If I'm away from a plug point I find taking out the battery, pressing on the power button etc helps.

Obviously I'd rather it just do what it's meant to. Using A06 bios. Thanks in advance.

think this was discussed a bit earlier in this thread. something to do with the battery profile having the screen dimmed. i might be wrong though.

i've actually got a couple of questions myself..

i've just installed the latest version of the command center 2.5.54.0 that was released on the 17th of this month.
can someone else who has installed this confirm if there is a problem when clicking on the Virtual Scrolling section in AlienTouch ?
I get a pop up screen with lots of code on it and then when i close that it crashes out of command center.
i don't believe i had this problem on the previous version.

my current Touchpad drivers by the way are the 14.0.12.0 from dell. i'm about to update these drivers to the latest ones on the dell site too.

also what does the OSD application do? I see it in the drivers download list but don't think it's installed on my laptop from factory. how can i check to see if i have it or a version of it on my laptop?

ignore the bit above about the OSD. just realised that it's just the popups when you press the touch bar above the keyboard or use the function keys etc. still don't see a way of checking the version installed though.

    ***EDIT***
ok i see it in the control panel|uninstall section now. it's listed as publisher MyOSD. presumed it would be under Alienware Corp. doh!

I think I saw someone mention the same problem with virtual scrolling and new version of CC. I used to have the HP multi-touch drivers but lost the setup file now and the link is dead (page 44 of this forum). Anyway, I hardly use the touch pad and have disabled the virtual scrolling feature - just a gimmick anyway.

OSD is the little onscreen message/icon that you see when you press the touch sensitive panel, volume control or screen brightness. Unless you don't see those icons, you definitely have OSD installed.

yep just figured out the osd before you posted :)

on the virtual scrolling thingy. i've just uninstalled the previous touchpad drivers and installed the latest ones from dell and the command center works fine now in that virtual scrolling section. something they changed obviously in the new command center version that only works with the latest dell version of the synaptics driver. nice of them to let us know

i just installed AlienGUIse with the Breed theme.
looks pretty good. but adds about 10 seconds to entering windows desktop after logging in. also everything seems a tiny bit slower with it running. not much but that extra boot time is enough for me to hit the uninstall button.

So my dell tech arrived to replace my screen...and the packaging on the screen says "refurbished"??

This is absolutely retarded! The system isn't even 2 weeks old and they're sending me used parts!

The rep is getting a call from me this afternoon and I will be sending this paper weight back to Dell for a completely new system.

i think they do that because they use that box to send back your old screen, if the screen is fine with no dead pixels i don't see a reason to send it back.

All replacement parts will have refurbished stickers on them no matter what ...

Had to do with some lawsuit i believe many years ago against Dell for selling used parts as new or something along those lines...

Well after taking a look at my bricked M15x i think the dead mobo is more the techs fault then anyone else...

There were screws missing, most of the parts weren't seated properly, he CAKED on thermal paste to the point where it's under the plastic of my 260 Die... He even scratched up my damn screen.

I demanded a replacement mobo and a new screen as well (He for some reason took the screws off and never put it back for the screen as well -_-).

They are sending a tech today to do the replacement and guess what?

    It's the same damn tech!

I don't want this guy anywhere near my laptop again so i'll just be taking the parts and PLENTY of screws to replace the ones he left out.

    I can't believe this -_-

once the tech called me i just told him to drop the parts off to me and surprise same tech that came and bricked and scratched my first system came. on my first system i called customer support and complained about it and they sent me a new system. i the number i used was (305) 251-9797.

So after two hours, the "new" screen is finally installed...and what-do-ya-know...two dead pixels and a nice gray spot on the right side of the screen. My best guess is the gray spot is something between the clear plastic shell and the actually screen base...but its completely noticeable, under any level of light or background. Not to mention the fact that the tech rep nearly ruined the hinge. The back part is all banged up with some dents.

Suffice to say, I'm doing a full exchange. Just spoke to the dell rep, she took care of everything and they've already processed my exchange and will be sending out a brand new unit...said I should expect it within 5-7 business days...seems pretty quick...does that sound normal?? Apparently they send the new unit along with the return label and I send back the one I have...

I thought about asking her about the new 740qm processors, but didn't want to complicate things even more. I'll assume the specs will be exactly the same as my original build. Just the fact that I don't have to send it off before receiving the new one makes me content.

Alright! Finally back on my M15x.

my 5870 is idling (with stock clocks) at 55-61c.

I already ordered some Thermal pads so once those come in i'll be re-TIMing and trying for cooler temps.

Unfortunately, i gotta live with the scratches on my screen for a few more days since they sent a replacement WLED instead of a replacement Edge to Edge plastic housing. =/

Also, i noticed that the idiot tech last time had put SOOOO much thermal paste that it seeped off the die and under the plastic for my 820qm.

Should i ask for a replacement CPU or is that not a problem?

the paste shouldn't be an issue, but check your temps, too much paste can cause it to run hot.
