Holy crap!
That's amazing and awesome temps to boot.
You think just getting the 5850 from DELL is worth the extra $150?
The 5870 mod is extremely tempting but not sure if it's worth it for gaming.
Still not sure which way I'm leaning.
Your benchmarks just made my decision harder![]()
Damn you!...lol
-
gaming will be more than fine with the 5850, since you can just flash it with 5870 clocks. but man these 5870 are so awesome, hahhahaha
just wait till dell solves these driver issue, then the dell 5850's will be awesome. -
Seen a brand new M15x for around $500 that came with a 5730 and i5 so I was thinking of getting the 5870 and i7 and installing myself(940XM
in one of my crazier ideas!)
The heatsink on the 5730 should fit right? Same as the one they use for the Nvidia GPU's isn't it?
This might require some deep thinking....... -
$500, man thats crazy cheap. and yes the heatsink will work. the heatsink is the same for all cards. but man $500 where is that deal at, i'll get another one if its that price, hahaha
-
For $500 there is nothing to even think about ... Get it and go crazy ....
-
eBay.
M15x is $510
940XM-QS i can get for around $700
5870 $350 from RJTech and I have a OCZ SSD
Elbow grease free!
I figure for around $1600 I can put together a pretty decent laptop
Then sell the leftover CPU and GPU and making a couple of hundred bucks.
Is the stock RAM worth upgrading?
If so what should I look for? Suggestions, all I need is 4GB's.
I know I will also need new pads and thermal paste anything else I might need for installation? -
Make sure the M15x is legit and not some fraud. Also, is that an auction or a buy it Now offer? If its an auction its probably going to rise
-
It's a auction for now but I've seen new and slightly used ones to buy for around $600 if I don't jump on that one.
I'm actually very surprised at how cheap some fully working units are.
Is the touchpad very bad?
Ive heard it's not the greatest.
What about the stock RAM, worth upgrading if it already comes with 4GB's? -
Let me get back to you on this. I haven't had much play time this week, I'll get back to it on the weekend. The last thing I tried was getting my 240M working in my M17x to use it as a physx card but the system wouldn't boot with it in.
-
Very nice
will be looking forward to it.
Wow! Now I can't wait.....hehehehehe
what do you think of the touchpad? -
I try to avoid using the touch pad but that's pretty much a rule with any laptop with me. I don't like any of them.
-
-
Hey mandrake, I just broke 11k vantage last night. Any vantage from you yet?
-
Nope not yet. I saw a while ago "TheMoo" had 10K GPU Vantage. Need to break that score if you can find his screen shot.
-
Yeah did see that, trying to hit the 10k gpu for the longest time. Now that I know how to flash the card I'm having it another go.
-
Have you tried 1150 on the memory? and if so did it help or make it worse?
-

GREAT JOB! Well deserved +1 REP!!
-
my M15x with HD5850 doesnt seem to able to run the new Final Fantasy 14 benchmark that just got released today.. anyone know why? it crashes everytime i tried to run it, i downloaded DirectX 9.0.
The benchmark can be downloaded here :
http://download.nvidia.com/downloads...VBenchmark.zip
works on my 3 years old AMD dual core, but not on my M15x which mades me kind of sad... -
nvidia must have sabotaged the ATI owners.
-
doesnt seem to be the case, my desktop build is running a HD 5770, but i heard this game is very CPU based, so im curious in knowing what my M15x i7 720 can do..
-
-
yeah upping the memory doesn't seem to affect the score, so i just leave it at 1100 must of the time.
-
Any more 5870's left for sale?
If not will the one from RJTtech work? It's for CLEVO's. -
man i don't know how moo did it, not even getting close so far. i'm thinking the 920 is the reason, too much power draw??? my clock aren't that far behind moo's but the score is way lower.
-
here is my lastest 06 bench, my best score so far, still trailing wattos and mandrake.

-
-
If you ask me that's still awesome.
You going for some records or something
-
Congrats, Mandrake! That's a helluva score for a first attempt!
-
Ahhhhh yes, isn't that the point of benching, to get the highest scores and rub it in peoples faces, lol
-
I don't know how Mandrake did it but his score is going to be tuff to beat.
I know someone who has a walkin freezer who's willing to let me use it...lol -
Wowsers, was going to download a bunch of the above listed benchmark tools, but realised some >200MB in size!!!
However, I'm not at home for at least another week, so if I'm only able to download one of the above to test out my new stock M15x (i.e. to compare with others results and ensure everything is working as it should) which would be best? -
3d mark vantage is probably the best for your needs. That and 3dmark06 are the 2 main benches.
-
EDIT: did a web search so it's all good!
-
So what if its 200mb lol.. get a tpg cap and you'll be fine.
-
How are the Refreshed GPU's fairing out with the M15x when comparing it to the GTX260m? Better? Worse? Same?
-
Much better. The 260M is more comparable to the 8800/9800 cards. The 5850/5870 is a new generation of GPUs.
-
Ok this is crazy. How are you guys getting these 5850 drivers to install.
The only 1 I can get to work is the crappy official 1 from Dell.
I downloaded the 10.3 drivers and extracted them to the default location.
I next cancelled the Catalyst installation.
Then I went to device manger and selected update driver and pointed it to the extraction path from the 10.3 but it just says "windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date"
Help please! -
I downloaded the 10.6 ATI mobility drivers and then did a manual install from the Device manager.... After that i installed the CCC from the Dell drivers.. So extract the dell drivers and find the CCC folder inside there and run setup from within that folder and voila everything is working correctly ....
-
That's just it. I can't do a manual install from device manager. If I have it search and point to where the drivers extracted to it says " best driver already installed" If I try to select the driver via "have disk" its looking for the .inf file that I can't find.
-
You do need to use "have disk" and point to the directory that contains the inf. Look for a folder called driver in your extraction.
-
Can any 5850 users tried running the Final Fantasy 14 benchmark, cause i still seem to be unable to run it, crashes everytime i ran it. This really worries me, because the main point of this laptop was to play that game.
I'm on Dell's latest ATi driver. I have DirectX 9 installed.
The benchmark can be downloaded from here:
http://download.nvidia.com/downloads/nZone/demos/FFXIVBenchmark.zip -
I can't find any folder called "drivers"
I used the default extraction path of c:\ATI\Support\10-3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu
The only folders in there are Bin64, Config, Images & Packages.
-
I see it now. Its in the packages folder. I'll give it a try.
-
Still not working. Pointed to the drivers folder and it still says "best driver is already installed"
I tried have disk and browsed to drivers folder and selected 5800 series but when it goes to install it says "driver not compatible with this version of windows" -
Make sure to uninstall your original driver.find the original install executive and run the uninstall. Then check device manager if it still showing then uninstall and delete the driver, otherwise it will keep reverting back to it. When it finally says vga driver, then go to the new driver folder, find the config folder , open it and inside is a file named install manager, open it with note pad, at the bottom should be install work around, change that from false to true, then save the file. Now run the install exe. Hopefully that will get your new driver working.
-
I ran it on low resolution on stock clocks, without fail. The screen isn't large enough to support the high resolution.
I would recommend ditching the Dell driver and picking up 10.6 from ATI. I had shoddy performance in some games (WoW specifically, I was getting 20 - 40 FPS on Dell drivers and a solid 60 on 10.6 -- In Orgrimmar) using the ones from Dell.
-
What the heck!!
Still no go. I uninstalled the original driver. That left me with the standard VGA graphics adapter driver. I changed the file to =true then ran the ati install. ATI install manager shows what its going to install but there was no display driver listed
. I left it finish but no driver installed. Maybe I have this thing so screwed up that I should just do a clean install of windows.
-
wow really!!! try the manual method one more time before doing a clean install.
-
Thanks for the reply, are you on ATi 10.6 driver when you ran this benchmark?
If so, i'll give the 10.6 driver a try! -
Just tried it with no success.
From device manager I selected update driver and pointed it to the ATI drivers folder. It said "latest driver is already installed"
I then tried it with the have disk method and selected the 5800 series from the drivers folder inf file that was in there. It says "this driver is not compatible with this version of windows"
Maybe something is wrong with the 10.3 I have so I just tried the 10.6 with the same results and messages.
-
I sure am.
