I had some problems installing 10.6 from the main AMD website. It kept saying the plain VGA drivers were more up to date than 10.6, lol.

I downloaded from Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM and it started working. I am in the process of running benchmarks and comparing them to my 10.5 results as well. So far, only difference worth noting is I have not recieved a large cursor since updating. Here's hoping that issue is gone for good.

I assume they were correct. This was the extraction path:

When you select the driver to download you have to select notebook graphics.

I just did a fresh install. I installed the Intel chip set driver and nothing else.

I just downloaded the new 10.6 drivers and extracted them to the default location. When the Catalyst install manager loaded I hit cancel.

I then went in to the config folder in the extracted location and modified the Installmanager.cfg workaroundinstall=true

I then ran the ATI setup from the extracted location and once again install manager does not show a driver to be installed.

What am I doing wrong? :mad2:

I am currently using latest Dell's 5850 driver.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

First, Uninstall the dell drivers. That should leave you with "standard VGA graphics adapter"

Downloaded the new 10.6 drivers (make sure its the mobility version) and extract them to the default location. When the Catalyst install manager loads click cancel to end it.

Next go into the config folder in the extracted location and modifiy the Installmanager.cfg file using notepad to open it. Change workaroundinstall=false to true and save the file.

Run the ATI setup from the extracted location to install the 10.6 driver.

Credit for this goes to Inapp he told me how to do it.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the later posts. Glad you worked it out.

This may not be perfectly relevant, but the FFXIV benchmark ran butter smooth on my 5870 at 1920x1080 using the 10.6 drivers. Since your 5850 is essentially the same card, it should work perfectly.

You're entirely welcome. Is that the famous Intel paper clip?

Inapp, are you using the stock power supply or have you upgraded? What is the rating for the stock brick?

still stock, rating @ 150 but not really sure how much it is really outputting. didn;t want to buy a power brick yet since no one an confirm it will make a difference. getting an i3 in a few days, try some benching on that.

That sounds fun. You've been bitten by the benchmarking bug! Lord knows you've shown an aptitude for it.

My power brick is only 120W. I don't think it's enough when both the 920XM and the 5870 get cranked up. I'm going to have to go shopping again.

    Edit: Inapp, WTH an i3?

Not a bad score there! Anyways thanks for that benchmark you posed, I ran the benchmark earlier successfully with the updated 10.6 driver. Seems like the Dell driver does not support this benchmark...

Anyways I scored 2024 on high resolution (1080p) and 3300 on low resolution (720p). Still kind of disappointed in these scores given that its still is a $1500+ machine, but I am on the 900p screen.

Square Enix regards to the benchmark scores:

[8000 and over] Extremely High Performance
Easily capable of running the game on the highest settings.

    [5500–7999] Very High Performance
Easily capable of running the game. Should perform exceptionally well, even at higher resolutions.

    [4500-5499] High Performance
Easily capable of running the game. Should perform well, even at higher resolutions.

    [3000-4499] Fairly High Performance
Capable of running the game on default settings. Consider switching to a higher resolution depending on performance.

    [2500-2999] Standard Performance
Capable of running the game on default settings.

    [2000-2499] Slightly Low Performance
Capable of running the game, but may experience some slowdown. Adjust settings to improve performance.

    [1500-1999] Low Performance
Capable of running the game, but will experience considerable slowdown. Adjusting settings is unlikely to improve performance.

    [Under 1500] Insufficient Performance
Does not meet specifications for running the game.

Source: FINAL FANTASY XIV Official Benchmark

The only machine I saw online that scored abit over 8000 was nonetheless an overclocked desktop i7 980x with HD 5870 GPU, however you're looking at 4000 to 5000 with an average desktop i7 930 with HD 5870 GPU, very demanding game. This benchmark does not support any SLi or XFire configurations yet.

I was hoping to max this game before purchasing the M15x, well I guess thats not happening.

Re-ran at low setting for someone else. It's a demanding game, but it looked very good at both resolutions (low setting running in a window).

As expected the 5870 trounces my 260 but I was surprised by my load time being faster than the 920XM. Must be the SSD showing it's worth :)

Yep, you killed me on the load times with the SSD. I ran the benchmark from the mechanical disk (500GB). Wonder if the load times affect the scores or is just a separate statistic?

    Hi Guys,

After using my M15x for a few weeks I'm ready to do a little Oc'ing of the 260m.

I'm using 197.16 drivers, can't alter clocks with Nvidia System tools, and can't get Rivatuner to detect the correct Performance 3D clocks, so as a result can't overclock much because the slider bar just isn't big enough lol.

I presume the system tools issue is because of the drivers. Are there specific drivers required for it to work correctly with the 260m?

    Thanks ...

I am thinking i want to flash it maybe a bit higher and leave it there since the temps are good .. Was thinking along the lines of what The Revelator has his flashed to 750/1050 ...

The card can handle alot more so im trying to find a happy medium and squeeze out as much performance as i can before temps go to crazy... Im not sure about the 1.05 voltage though and how high and stable i can go but i guess its going to take some long term testing to figure it all out...

What happened to your heatsink ?....
