Thanks for the tips.
I have done everything you stated and even run driversweeper.
But the 10.6 installer still refuses to install the driver for the 5850. It only installs catalyst control center.
When i try to do it manually from device manager, absolutely no compatible driver can be found.
Stuck with standard vga adapter for now....
Please help.

Did you guys actually buy 3Dmark Vantage?
If you didn't, then what tests (and settings) did you run to benchmark?
I just installed the trial version, and I can't figure out how to use it. :/ -
you have to sign up to use it. once as its the trial version i bought the 20$ one
-
-
first turn off the feature tests and then just start benchmark that's at there is to it
-
What are you guys using to OC the ATI's?
Ive tried Riva tuner and ATI tool non seem to work for me
Please tell me the version and software you are using so i cant tickle my card some -
I got P8441 with CPU @ 11972 and GPU @ 7686.
Is this a good score for a 5850 and i7-820QM? -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
-
-
Used both trial version of 3DMark06 and PCMark Vantage
for my i7-820 and 5850 GPU I got....
3DMark06 : 12795
PCMarks :9439
What do you guys think? -
nice score for a 5850 on vantage but ive got a better 06 score which doesn't really count
-
I want a score like that.
Ran it again with my graphics chip with a 800/1000 overclock. Surprisingly, it only reached 76C max. Got 9225 total score now. Plus my CPU got a 12k score. -
nice improvement keep it up

I have finally managed to install the 10.6 drivers over the stock Dell drivers in windows 7 64bit.
To anyone else having this problem, i thought i would write this guide here. Credit to everyone else who has helped me. Thanks!
0. Before starting, download the 10.6 mobility drivers from amd's website. IMPORTANT. Download the file that is 70+ MB. Do not download the smaller file that is 69MB or so. That file was the source of my problems.
1. Go to control panel and click "programs and features".
2. Uninstall "ATI Catalyst Install Manager"
3. Make sure you click the option labelled Express Uninstall.
4. Once done, you should only have a standard vga adapter left in your system.
5. Reboot your computer into safe mode (keep pressing F8 at startup).
6. Use Driversweeper from Guru3D to clear out all the ATI junk left in the system.
7. Restart in normal windows mode.
8. Again go to control panel and click on device manager. Click on your standard vga adapter and "update driver."
9. Point it to the folder where you extracted the 10.6 drivers in step 0 and click ok.
10. The new driver should install and say "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series". -
Actually there is an easier way. After uninstalling the old drivers and extracting the new ones navigate to C:\ATI\Support\10-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc\Config and open the file called InstallManager.cfg and edit the last line and change the "false" to a "true". Then just go through the regular setup routine. This will install everything, not just the driver.

The other guy is lucky, he gets 12500 on his CPU.
-
probably the ram speed affects
-
Makes me feel slightly better on the inside. ;D -
jajaajajaja i think that benchmarks are useless, worth showing off perhaps the greatest ability, but for me what matters is the ability to play what I like to max detail
-
Try RivaTuner if you don't want to flash the cards.

Mandrake your cpu and gpu is colder than my idle?!?!?!?

ah ok i wasn't hallucinating those numbers then lol
-
Yeah, once you start going beyond the thermal limits of the system, if there isn't proper cooling you can easily fry parts of it. I usually wait for my GPU to hit 20C before starting a run.
-
are you benchmarking with only 2 gb of ram? and how to connect a AC unit to the cooling system?
-

My system literally sits on top of the AC unit. -
why only 2 gb and the slow 1066? putting the laptop there will not make issues on it?

The notebook sitting on the AC unit doesn't cause harm, just a very cold notebook. -
lol 19 degrees idling are really great, my better idling temps are 47 with my 260m and artic ceramique, and for what i saw are quite good temps

Any links were I can find 2GB modules?
That Kingston HyperX looks interesting to but I can only find the desktop versions -

sweet do you beat your asus record. so what setting did you use for throttle stop? -

Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory Model KHX1333C7S3K2/4G
Just be aware, lower latency = more heat so you'll have to keep an eye on your memory temps also. Good thing Kingston has a good warranty in case you don't.

In throttlestop I set the TDP and TDC to 110. Of course it never got that high but I will try it with a 240W adapter. -
thanks,
have you tried vantage with the throttle stop yet, seen joker hit 20k cpu with his 940. that blew my mind, hahahah -

I very good with temp monitoring.
Any other options that we can look at that might run as hot?
You can't imagine how much I appreciate this -

so did you order your M15x yet.
i thought mandrake had a used set of those for sell, he changes stuff so often so kind of hard to keep track, lol. -
You're right I forgot.

I literally have a bag of ram at home. I need to stop buying and swapping memory. -

At nearly half off I'd call that sharing.
-
I hAvent seen too much benchmarking recently on this thread, I'd like to see how much more I could have pushed it before I sold my M15x.
-
It's basically the G73 with better OC'ing GPUs.
