Hello all, I am new to the forums but I do not know what to do with my laptop.
    Alienware M15x:
    • I7-740qm (1.73 GHz turbo up to 2.93 GHz)
    • 8GB of RAM
    • AMD Radeon HD 5850 (unsure, computer says 5800)
    • 750GB Hard-drive 7200RPM
    • Windows 7 Home Premium
When I first received it back in 2011, I believe. It was running all of my games perfectly fine on good settings running 60 fps. I am an avid WoW player and I used to play on it perfectly fine on good at least.
Anyhow, I was running windows 10 but it just wasn't running well on my laptop, and some of the alienware software wasn't working properly.
I reinstalled windows 7 and world of warcraft. I ran around the world of warcraft and I can barely pull 60fps on LOW SETTINGS. It becomes very choppy with/without v-sync. most of the time it's at 30 fps.
This laptop used to run perfectly fine. Should I spend the money and upgrade? I already know that I want the 920XM but I don't know what graphics card to get. I want to game on this laptop because my work place is dead most of the time and my boss told me I can to kill time. Please, any help would be wonderful. Thank you!

Edit: I have updated every driver in this laptop via Driver Booster 3, except for the synaptics touch controller? It's giving me an issue when updating.

WoW has been updated with better graphics as time goes on. Look at a FirePro M6000 as an inexpensive upgrade (around $80, 57% faster). If you have more money to spend consider a GTX 680M or a GTX 970M at the top end.

It seems like upgrading the video card is the next step. Unless you'e having issues with temperatures. Have you checked that?

Also, make sure the little gadget icon isn't lit (Stealth mode). If it is, press the button to disable it. It decreases the performance of the machine.

Looks like I've got the exact model as you, except I have gone to a SSD, and have recently run into a similar issue. I can barely watch YouTube so I'm hoping to give my video card an update in the future. I love the computer so I don't want to give up on it.
