I'm seeking simple PNP upgrades for my son's M15X which he uses to run graphically demanding games.

    I've gotten 8GB of RAM and ordered a 920XM (from a Q470).

What GPU would be a PNP upgrade for the current 460M which would allow the use of the existing heatsink etc.

    Many thanks
    Julian

The 7970M is easy to install, provided you buy the right version. It's pretty much plug and play if you buy the version designed for dell/alienware. The MSI/Clevo models you will run into issues on. You may have to flash the video cards bios to get anything to display on those versions, Overheating issues only happen when the thermal paste is not installed correctly or if there is not proper contact with the GPU die and the original heatsink. Once you install the 7970M, you can install a video card bios to make it run at a lower voltage, (0.975V) which in turn will allow it to run cooler. Make sure the GPU comes with the proper GPU Spreader bracket and screws. (Very important!)

As far as installation, you should be able to use the original heatsink. Look into getting IC Diamond 24 for thermal paste and also, if you order the 7970M make sure it comes with the thermal pads for the memory/mofsets. If not, you can buy a big square pack of phobya thermal pads and cut out what you need. If you have any more questions on this, let us know.
