Ok well last night I started messing around with OCing my new M15x just for fun and well even though the 940xm is great I tried to push it along with my video card alittle. Well everthing was going good but when my benchmarks used both CPU and GPU well the system just shut down. No harm was done to the system at all but the PSU stopped working but after unpluging it and pluging it back up all was good. So here is my question. Anyone using the M17x 240w PSU on the M15x ever have any problems. The reason I ask is cause on my old XPS I used a higher rated PSU and it destroyed my battery and then the charge port. Any input would be great!

when you used the higher rated PSU with your XPS, was the voltage of the PSU the same as the stock PSU?

If it was, I'm surprised there were problems.

No it was an off brand relacement Im sure the wattage was higher also so I was wondering if a m17x psu would be ok to use.

Yes, Inap and a number of others have used the 240W PSU from the R2 (now also used with the R3) successfully. I'll probably pick one up myself, particularly if I install a 6970m. On the other hand, your 150W model shouldn't be crapping out with a "litttle" overclocking -- or even a lot. The 150W's have shown a remarkable ability to power o/c'ed M15x's at the very limits of the component capabilities. Get Dell to send you a new one. You don't have to share all you know about o/c'ing during the discussions.

Surely if it was your PSU that went then the battery would've kicked in?

When I say it popped I dont mean it is fried it was good after I unplugged it cause the PSU shut off to save it from frying. I guess you cant max out a 940XM and a gtx 460m at the same time and do bench test. Oh well 240w PSU will be on the way next week. Oh also I remember seeing people on here wanting the Roccat gaming mice but they dont sell them in the states. Well im in germany so I can get them for people if anyone wants them. And as for the battery kicking in when its drawing 180+ watts when stress testing your system it will not hold up. So I imagine there is a feature built in cause drawing all that power from a 9 cell will damage it and or the MB.

I understand what you mean but what I'm trying to say is, if your PSU had packed in, even momentarily, then why would the system shut down?

Ok maybe I'm just misreading the OP, nevermind.

When I rebooted is when I found out that the PSU didnt work cause i got a crit low battery on the boot up. So with both the overclock on CPU ang gpu it seriously drained my battery. Thats why I think it shut down.

i really don't think it was the psu, it was just a hard crash. i get it all the time when doing extreme benching, next time just do a power drain and it should be fine.
i mainly use the 240 psu because it stays cooler when doing extreme benching with high oc's .

Im sure it was the PSU cause it went out and wouldnt draw power till I unpluged it and plugged it back in.
