Hi guys ,, hope someone can help with this one. I took my laptop into work last night for nightshift quiet hours. I used in work, no problems,, played a bit of footie mgr then closed the lid as normal and that was that.

When I got in this am,, I set my laptop on the table, plugged into the wall and booted up to use.

When the screen came on it appears dim as tho the power was getting to the machine. My first thought was obvioulsy the battery. Checked that all connections where firm . Also noticed with bat connected the Alien head was Red as normal,, and if I pulled out then it aslo went yellowish , again normal.

I then had a look to see if my powerplan had somehow changed on its own. It was still selelcted on balance as per usual. I tried clicking on the power saver option,, and strangely the screen lit up bright right away ?? When i clicked back to "Balance" , it went dim again????

I tried a retart ,, that did nothing,, and i tried a restore back a day,, although I didnt think Iit could be that anyway, as my work has no internet access , so it couldnt have downloaded anything last night while at work. Besides it was all fine last night at work.

Really not sure what to look at next. Never came accross anything lile this before.

    Anyone any idea whats up?

Guys think I sussed it and feel a bit of a mong,, I noticed that the stars on the brighness where all the way down at low.

Switched it back to full , and all appears normal again.

Still cant figure out tho why it would just turn itself all the way down on its own , when not even in use ???????????

Again if anyone can shed some light I'd be grateful , esp if it does it again

On the subject of power plan anyways,, what one do you guys use?

Was wondering if I should put on high performance,, but does this cause the system to overheat quicker , ultimately shortning life span of any components??

Or does it just eat electricty like a muther lol ,, what are the pro / con ??

the screen brightness has nothing to do with the other power settings as you can be in high performance and use the lowest/dimmest screen setting.

i am not sure of this but i think that windows remembers your dim setting from last time of use. so if last time you used balanced setting and manually dimmed the screen and then changed to power saver, the next time you switch to balanced i will go back to the setting you manually changed.

so my best guess to your situation would be that you manually dimmed the screen last time you used balanced setting, or "auto dim" activated and changed the screen brightness.

Must been that auto-dim,, as the last time i was playing footie mgr,, and never have my screen dimmed ever anyway.

How does the auto-dim feature work then,, in case its still set to do it again at a latter time ???

Click on the battery/power icon in the tasktray, select More Power Options, select the Power Plan you wish to adjust (i.e., Balanced) and then click on Change Plan Settings. Set the Dim the Display setting to taste.

Cheers mate ,,Yeh thats all set to dim after 5 mins ,, but thats just if left unattended. As soon as move the touchpad would come back to fully lit.

That never happened before,, ,it just remained dim. For some reason tt had turned itself down on the actual brighness to 0 !

Wondering what the auto dim fearure is,, incase it will do it again by its self if its set to somewhere ??

Or is just a freak occurence ??

Return to the same place (Balanced)/Change Plan Settings and then select Change Advanced Power Settings. In the popup box, click on Display. There's an array of adjustments setting how and when the display dims. Experiment until you find the combination that suits you. Or just disable the dimming feature altogether.
