Nvidia Inspector will let you overclock a small amount with no modding. (In case you didn't know).

What brand card did you buy? I have the Dell card.

Not sure really. It was taken out of an HP laptop. Which code on the card tells me who built it (except for 'Made in China' ;) )?

Here, that´s 431.36 driver modded inf for your Quadro M4000M. Don´t forget to first disable driver signature check before installing it.

I just realized that you asked about the modded driver, not an unlocked bios.

I modded the driver myself. The bios is what I was talking about earlier.

The driver is easy to mod so if you have trouble with the one you were provided, I can help.

Later, when you want to overclock, if Nvidia Inspector does not provide you will need to modify your vbios. Unfortunately however I do not believe the Dell vbios is compatible with HP cards.

Thank you very much :) I have already geared up to mod it myself, found the manual for GTX 970M, but I really wouldn't like to mess it up, This would be my first operation like that since mid/late 2000s...

I am currently in a bit of a pickle. As soon as I plugged in the card and started the M15x up I get black screen and one long-two short beeps... Any ideas?

Finally got another Quadro 4000M running in my M15x (thanks guys for how to mod the stuff!). The leap in perfomance is very palpable. Now for experimentation with M17x ;)

Not really. In the meantime I have acquired an M4000M with chipped core from Dell distribution, it worked, but after stressing it would give up. So I took the Dell one and the HP one to a service point to swap the BGA, but the guy recommended vBIOS flash from one to the other. Guess what - it works like a charm! So it seems that an original Dell vBIOS works with HP M4000M. Just to be recorded to anyone that might want to get a cheap HP card but worries about compatibility issue - worry no more ;)

I will later post the vBIOS from my card for future reference :)

Post pictures please, this may be the first recorded instance of a Maxwell card higher than a M1000M working in the M17x R2 without color inversion

EDIT: you did not specify if the success was on M15x or M17x R2. M15x known to work with M4000M as it is similar core to 970M. Nobody has managed to get Maxwell GM2xx cores to work in M17x R2 internal display

This is M15xR2 thread, didn't think it was neccessary :p
I'm referring to HP distibution M4000M working in Dell Alienware M15xR2. In this very thread it was stated that an HP card won't work and that vBIOS won't transfer.

    Hello,
I finished adjusting and OC the bios.
    Here is the finished one.
Here is a logfile with Fire Strike stress test.

Now the GPU Boost works with 1216MHZ@Vram1400(2800)MHZ. (Original Boost 1013) Result ~15% more performance with a litle bit overvolt, but all stabile.
Maybe somebody can overclock the GPU more, but that's enough for me.

I share the finished Bios file here. Tere are 2 Files.

[email protected] With minimal Overvolt -->~0.04V more Max 0.968 V
[email protected] With more Overvolt -->~0.15V more Max 0.975 V

WARNING: Firmware image PCI Subsystem ID (1028.06DA)
does not match adapter PCI Subsystem ID (1028.02A2).
Any chance on changing the ID in the ROM?
    <-Nevermind, bypassed that, now it's:
BIOS Cert 2.0 Verification Error, Update aborted.

Just a quick note - there appears to be a version of M4000M WITH SLI. I've found a seller who has one. And that's the problem, only one. I wonder how well a pair of M4000Ms would work in M18X R2... Has anyone tried it?

What are the effects of an unlocked vBIOS for the card? I mean, does it turn the card into a GTX equivalent, or what?

And, by any chance, anyone willing to comply to e-begging for uploading an unlocked M4000M unlocked vBIOS? ;)

The biggest effect is to remove the power limit of 75w so the card can hold it's clocks and potentially be overclocked. The secondary effect is to allow for higher than 135MHz (130Mhz?) overclock on the GPU slider. I found that RAM overclocking adds almost zero benefit with this card, so that is less important.

Hey MrMogwai, do you think you could post your vBIOS that worked in the Alienware M15x with the HP card?

    Thanks!

Yeah, give me a few days, I'll need to reassemble the machine to pull the vbios out, and kinda don't have time for much recently :)

Did you ever end up posting you VBIOS? I just got an M4000M in my dell M6700 and I am trying various VBIOS's for improved performance.

So to be perfectly clear, is the M4000m worth it for the Alienware M15x? Still trying to choose between the GTX 970m and M4000m, cause I did find a few cheap ones on Ebay and it seems that the M4000m is generally regarded as better.

Just wanted to confirm the M4000M worked right away. Just had to modify INF for drivers.

It was a Dell M4000M so Dell vBIOS seems to work well in M15x.

Does anyone know how to solve the verification error? I was modding vBIOSes for my K5000M no problem, but trying to flash my Dell model M4000M with its respective modifications is resulting in that error. Is it possible to circumvent it in nvflash or is it a result of how Maxwell BIOS editor (from TechPowerUp) saves new BIOSes?

    I'm using a Dell Precision M6700.
