The GTX 680M works very well. I have one!

However the 620M has to go at this point. Replace it with a i7 920 or 940xm asap otherwise you will bottleneck the 680M in many new titles.

Yeh GPU upgrade would be totally pointless without also upgrading the CPU. If you don't play many games then perhaps just go for the CPU and leave GPU upgrade for another day.

for the cpu it depends on what games he plays now and may wish to play in the future. if I remember correctly the 620xm and the 640xm will run circles around the 920xm and 940xm in single threaded apps such as most steam based games..
just my 2 pence worth :p

but yes the gpu does need updating to play more upto date and future games :)

I don't think 620xm exists. They are 620M and 640M. The 620M is clocked at 2.67Ghz and gets 1,193 CPUMark score for single threaded performance.
Best single threaded score I got on my 940XM is 1411 at 3.3Ghz. Looks like 620M is a dual core with hyper threading but it has a smaller L2 and L3 cache.

That CPU would be a serious bottleneck for any big name game in 2013/2014.

Besides that processor belongs to 32nm. Intel could make an 960xm / 980xm with more gigahertz or more cores. He left quickly when users could still exploit that technology.

Also say that GPU technology is widely used in conventional software. It should be a good graphics though one does not play or play occasionally.

Nope. There is no chip faster than the 920 or 940XM for nehalem based notebooks.

They are the only unlocked chips also which means they will run circles around the 620 and 640M. I have mine at 3.86ghz and even 4ghz is possible on 1 core! The 620M cannot attain such high speeds. Being 32nm doesn't make enough difference.

At 32nm nehalem quad could have been fun. Never happened though

I think the 920XM is the best way to go, actual speeds will vary but some can get a really good speed on stock voltage. I get 3.6-3.73Ghz on stock, with reasonable temps.

Keep in mind that this chip is originally 2.0Ghz stock speeds.

When prices are around $160+, it makes sense.

Lol I got a golden chip haha! I can only imagine what can be done with this chip on a volt mod and some serious cooling...

Anyway, Yeah you will be the first to know if I part out this aging beast! The crazy part is that my M15x is more powerful than my Home AMD Phenom II based desktop I have connected to my TV. The main reason why I wished the M15x was at least Sandy based...WiDi would had made this M15x my main PC for everything!
