Short version: I need to put what is in windows.old into just plain windows (and I don't know if this is included in that, but the registry needs to be restored as well). Hopefully this restores drivers that have vanished as well, I lost a few.

    Long version:
I own an alienware m15x. I recently was hit with a trojan that eliminated some critical components of Windows firewall, and had to do a restore (because it would be too hard for them to just have that online for me to download. Seriously, who would STEAL windows firewall?) installation. Long story short, all of my stuff is in windows.old. I put the screen resolution back where it was supposed to be, got my logon screen back to the red glyphs, got my background where it was, my user picture, and that's all. My programs and what not are still in windows.old, along with the breed theme. Oh and in device manager, it lists the following as missing (under the other devices spot):
    Base System Device
    Base System Device
    Base System Device
    Ethernet Controller
    Network Controller
    Unknown Device
    Unknown Device

I can get the hardware IDs for those drivers, but I imagine all of this can be solved if someone tells me how to put everything in windows.old where it should be (copy and paste didn't work, considering in-use files would have to be overwritten, and Windows typically doesn't like its brain to be messed with anyways). The disks that came with my computer are zero help, and I'm not about to pay 300 dollars to have my warranty renewed so they can come and do it. The Best Buy guy had no idea what he was talking about, which worried me because what he was suggesting would delete everything, so that is why I am here. It is beyond me. Many thanks in advance for any assistance given.

i had a friend run into a similar situation on a desk top.... parts of the registry were gone. so what he did was used a stanard windows XP PRO and installed it over top of it's self. then he had to reinstall many of the effected programs. and of course if the data is that valuable the first thing you need to do is back up the entire drive... you may have to buy a new drive, install it in an enternal case and using another pc you'll have to find software that makes a bootable cd or dvd and loads its own operating system and runs a program to copy drives. make the disk then boot from it, and make a copy of the drive before you attempt to make any changes to original HDD. hook up the external drive, install the disk with the HDD copying software on it. boot from the cd/dvd and copy or make a mirro image of the data first if if's that important.

if you want to go that far check out acronis true image.... it may make a bootable disk.
