Hi all, perhaps unsurprisingly with the age, my screen has a lot of scuffs and scratches

Am I right in assuming there will be a plastic clear screen over the actual lcd screen?

If so, can i replace them at all?

If so, how easy is that!?

    Thank you

Wouldn't know about the m15x, but I've taken a lot of laptops apart and never found any removable layer in front of the LCD, likely you need to replace the LCD panel as one piece.

Worth having a look for a disassembly video on YouTube or the service manual to confirm.

Yes there is a plexiglass panel over the LCD. There is an ebay store that sells used ones but I can't confirm the quality of them. I'm looking to buy one too. They have told me that none of them are cracked but they may have light scuffs on them.

The plastic cover is not replaceable as it’s glued to the frame.you can separate the LCD from the frame and then heat up the plexiglass and the frame to separate the two, that way you have just the LCD sitting in the frame after reinstallation. It does not give a clean look however

You can cut the skeleton on the back that holds the lcd when you remove the lid. that is what i would do.

I wonder if there is a way of buffing out all those scratches to a somewhat reasonable degree without making it worse overall. Personally Dell should have used glass rather than acrylic despite the cost and the risk of the whole thing shattering on falls.

There are a number of acrylic scratch remover products available and most of them seem to do a decent job if you go by the reviews. It will depend on the depth of the scratch but I may try some on my M15x which has a few decent scratches.

Take it to some well known and with good reviews auto shop that buffs headlights and ask them if they can do it, but dont expect them to accept unless you are OK with it turning bad due to the plastic being different to what they are used, etc..

The screen on M15X is covered with tough protective plastic, its not exactly a screen protector that can be peeled off but a solid permanent protector. You can try polish out the scratches instead of buying a replacement with Brasso.

There are ways to pry it open, but it's a huge pain. You would need isopropyl, thin prying tool and a loooot of time. I would suggest just using Brasso or other polishing product.
