    Wouldn't it be better to remove it? Seems to just be there to limit airflow, which is bad unless I'm missing something.

    Well on mine the thing is touching the CPU heatsink which seems to suggest it is there to dissipate heat?! I don't think there will be any significant difference with or without but that is just me.

    i always assumed it was some sort of emi shield, nothing thermal or airflow related.

    My guess would be - for additional protection, since otherwise the memory modules would only be protected by that big plastic(and rather fragile looking) cover.
    I haven't removed it since I tend to carry this rather heavy machine around every so often(+some way too active kids in the house), but in a safe environment and if the machine is relatively immobile it should be fine to get rid of it.
    I doubt it would make any noticable difference performance/temp-wise however...
