Where exactly are the thermal pads needed on a the gfx card, and are they all the .5mm size? I have the 5850m, and the stock pads seem to be of 2 different sizes (possibly 1mm?). The 2 squares on the right vertical area are 2 thermal pad squares stock from previous gfx card and I believe that those are 2 of the required areas, not sure about the rest

Is the plastic cover around the die area needed to be there or effect performance?

    Pic attached of my gfx

usually on all the black squares (memory chips)

the plastic cover is there mostly to protect against too much thermal paste

one other thing i noticed was that there was a thermal pad about 1mm on the heatsink near the copper square over the gpu die. After removing it i've noticed an increase by a few degrees in the temp.

It wasn't off the cpu, it was specifically on the heatsink for the gpu. It was located right below the gpu die (below the copper square on heatsink).
