Think I need a new battery. I just noticed that my laptop is stuck at 10% and wont charge further. I have tried taking the battery out the back keeping power on and re-connecting,,,it will then charge for a few secs and stop again.

Its not a biggy as I usually use it with the power cable in anyway but if I where to go looking around for a replacement where is the best affordable place to get one. Obviously as I hardly use it on the battery its not worth spending a small fortune.

The battery I had was the bigger of the two that used to be available and made the laptop sit slightly raised up at the back.

    Cheers for any advice

You had the 9 cell which is nearly impossible to find nowadays. No 3rd party maker ever made it afaik so you'll be limited to used or new old stock batteries if you can manage to find one. They are also expensive. The 6 cell is easier to find and was made by 3rd parties as well which are usually cheaper than the genuine Dells. A good source is parts-people.com. E-bay is also a good option if the seller has a good reputation. I recently got a 9 cell from a UK based seller on e-bay for around $120. It was never used but since it is so old and was probably sitting on a shelf all these years, the rubber feet on it started breaking up after a month. If it ever dies on me, I'll just keep it for the extra lift it gives the laptop. I never run my M15X on battery anyway.

Is Alibaba an OK site to order from? I believe I found some of those 9 cells off of that website.

Depends on the seller, but make sure the 9 cell you found is not for the older "Area-51 m15x."

Make sure it is the same as this:

My Battery has been working fine up until yesterday. The only thing I have done is open up the laptop for a clean out. However now when I load up the laptop from sleep it goes to a black screen and I get a two tone alert sound. The message on the screen says your Battery has suffered a permanent failure and needs to be replaced (or words to that effect).

My Battery is still charging tho to 100%. Apart from some high temps and a bit of juddering in game (what I was putting down to GPU and temps ,hence why opened up to clean) everything seems ok. I always play with it plugged in any way,, just annoying this constant alert.

Has anyone else ever experienced it and do I just ignore it?

Are you on the latest BIOS (A09)?

Try doing a power drain (remove battery, unplug AC power, hold down power button for 30 seconds).

You may also just want to disable the battery (press FN+F2 in Windows). Maybe this will make the messages disappear but it will also disable battery charging.

If that doesn't help, perhaps it is indeed time for a new battery.

Yeh tried the power drain,,,,think I am just going to order new battery on Wednesday when I get paid. I wonder if this might be also causing some of my heat issues too. I have ordered some thermal paste but while I was waiting I gave it an open up and good clean out. Temps are down now a bit but the match engine on footie mgr still jitters slightly every so often for a sec or two,,,,like the way it would do all the time if you unplug the power cable and play just on battery or if you put it in stealth mode.

I had another pop up from Dell Support Asst saying battery no longer able to fully charge or power laptop. So even tho in system tray it is showing 100% I am unsure if it really is, or perhaps I'm only getting 100% of what the battery is now capable of.

I was having very similar problems to what you are having. I had warnings that I needed to replace my battery, too. It turned out my PSU had just started to die on me. My battery now holds a charge since replacing the PSU and the warnings have gone away. I don't think it is common for these PSUs to die, but it's something to consider. If you notice your GPU downclocking in games for unknown reasons, your laptop might not be getting enough juice from the PSU.

Really? Its funny you say that as my power cable is frayed a little at one end where it connects to the adapter (not the wall plug side but connection to laptop side). It has happened over time probably from being wound up and put into the rucksack when going out. I have put a little tape over it to stop it getting any worse but may be worth trying to replace first and see. Thing is they are about £30 right now on ebay as well,, and the battery is around £40+. Don't really want to be out of 30-40 quid for one of them if I dont need to lol.

That sounds exactly like how my old cable was. I noticed it was getting super hot also since I switched to the i7, so I decided to upgrade to the 240 and it fixed all of my problems.

For that price, I'd confirm battery wear level before purchasing. You may end up with an expensive height extender for your M15X.
