Hey everyone. I dropped a 920xm into my m15x and it's running strong with no issues. I'm sure most of you guys did like me and ditched whatever cpu your beast was packing prior to your upgrade well that's what i made this post concerning. I am in need of a 840qm or 820qm there may not be many out there laying around but just in case I was hoping to appeal to my fellow m15x lovers to see if any cpus need a home. I may end up needing several for my work computers and it might be a good way for you guys to free up some space and make some money. I know this isn't the marketplace and if it needs to be moved i understand but hopefully you guys won't mind too much. Thanks everyone

I would put i5-540M instead of i7-720QM. It is not marketplace so I can say truth :) 720QM is a joke, sorry guys.max turbo bins are 1.73 for 4 cores (1.6+x), 2.56 for 2 cores and miserable 2.8 for 1 core, am I correct? 740QM is a minimum requirement to buy 1st gen i7 but way-way better is 820QM. As for prices 720qm is what their owners dream about to get rid of for some money :)

M15X supports fsb overclocking but you can't do it too high if you plan using Wi-Fi card. Better buy 620m or 640m instead of 740QM unless you render video.

These cpus would go into laptops in a patrol car. They don't need to be super fast but something quad core would be nice. They currently have i5 520m's and they drag . I'd entertain any 1st gen cpus that are better performers. Thanks for the replies guys

Which machines are you putting them into out of curiosity? and I will see if I still have a pair of 840QM's ( Elitebook 8740W and Dell XPS series donors )

They are getac s400 ruggedbooks i believe. They support socket 989 rPGA so that's why I'm gonna try out a single one first. I'm not even 100% sure they can be upgraded. I know the cpu can be removed but they didn't come with an i7 option from go. If you have an 840qm i would be very interested.

Think you need to be aware of Arrandale vs. Clarksfield; even though these systems seem to have a dedicated GPU, it could expect switching to the Intel HD. May want to verify with the manufacturer first whether this system can run full-time on the GeForce only.

Multiple cores are an undesired necessity, not a goal an sich. And they're only of use on multithreaded applications, if you say they're 'dragging', look at the real situations where this occurs; which programs are running 100% and how many cores/threads do they use? If the bottleneck programs are all single-threaded; sort by single perfomance and take your pick from that list; you may have better actual performance (and spend less, to boot).

Oh, and got a 640m, if you're interested. It's 2nd in the single list, only the 920xm beats it; so I'd get that one (have 30°C and 35W to spare).

Getacs can be finicky, they guys may give you a hard time but a few members over in the Panasonic forum are familiar with them and may know more and have advice as well ( OTHER than buy some toughbooks )

I am sorry but it looks like my 840's are gone as well.

Buy SSD and only then if you need one, buy CPU.

If the systems support it. Plus that is an added cost. And there is a whole more learning curve with people not used to SSD's. Like SSD usage/speed ratio. A faster CPU should help a lot but I also agree that an SSD will help as well. This has to be based on who will use it for what purpose lol.
