    Hi, all

I was setting up my m15x with an enclosure and noticed that my USB3 express card had gone dead (wasn't showing up in device manager, removing and adding drivers didn't change anything). It was still under warranty (startech), so I RMAed it. Fine...

So the RMA is still out. I came across another USB3 express card when cleaning out some old gear (AKE, same controller).

Strangely, it doesn't register either... which is making me suspicious... like the express port/slot might be off or inoperable...

    Has anyone else encountered this?

I don't rightly know what if anything has changed since the... slot... was last working. I was running w10... but I think it was prior to the anniversary update.

I'm running the stock A09 bios, which doesn't have any options around express cards.
USB selective suspend is off. Link state power management is off.

Both cards are UPD7200201 (or 202 - it's not clear). They use NEC / Renesas drivers.

Hi, Azshalasa. That was a good idea but (un)fortunately the band cables are still secure. I took a moment to update my EC to 1.18... nothing there either... Do you happen to know which brand of controller/drivers your card is using?

I'll wait on the RMA card to arrive and see if I'm just unlucky on the second card test...

Hello, i don't know what driver i'm using for express slot, but i would be happy to help you if you teach me how to know what driver i'm using, i dont know because my expressslot are using any generic driver wich came with w10.
But for my express card usb 3.0 just follow the link bellow.

Have you checked to make sure the ribbon cable is secure on both ends (motherboard and Express card board)?

I had this issue once and it turned out that the ribbon cable on the Expresscard board had come out. You will need to remove the Expresscard slot to check this because the cable plugs in on the underside of the Expresscard board.

Good thinking, @kosti, I'll give that a try next... right after I get the m15x back up and running again... 680m just flamed out.

It should not require drivers under Windows. If you don't see it listed in Device manager, there may be a problem with the board itself or the cable connecting it to the motherboard. Like I suggested earlier, make sure the cable is plugged in on both ends.

Should be the motheboard since it is connected to the pci express bus. There's a little IC on the expresscard board though.

I did a test by unplugging the board and there was no change in Device Manager. Therefore, this port is sort of like a USB port in that Device Manager does not list the port when no device is connected to it. To test it, it looks like you will need to plug in an Expresscard of some kind. If the port is empty, it will not show up in Device Manager so there's no way to test if it works or not.

    confirm

the expresscard slot is hidden in the device manager when the card is unplug, and show the device when the card is inserted

tested with a fake/clone 'AKE' 3 port USB 3.0 expresscard (chipset Fresco Logic FL1100)

Glad you got it working. I have the same exact card in mine. Works good, but some external hard drives need an extra USB port(from one of the laptop's native USB ports) for power in order for them to spin.

Months later: I took the time to remove the port and re-seat the cable on both sides. No dice, unfortunately. I'll order a replacement off ebay and see what's what.

At least they don't cost much. I see some bigger brands like Startech selling these but they cost a lot more.

I also have problem with mine. It always pops out shortly after insertion! (that doesn't read great...)

    Another month later:
Replacement slot/board/reader finally arrived; new assembly with a new cable from eBay. All of... 10 dollars.
Super-inconvenient to have mounts on the bottom of the internal magnesium cover! Anyway, I replaced the old reader.
On a clean install of 7 it registers the new part without even installing the chipset drivers.
With the Renesas drivers from the StarTech site, it can use both my generic Renesas card and my Startech card. If it runs on Win 10 I'll call this case closed - blown expresscard slot/board.

Edit: W10 is fine also. There are automatic windows drivers; they work but are less than stable for large file transfers. I had to manually pick the Renesas drivers to override the Microsoft drivers. Note that the Renesas cards have both a USB3 Host Controller and a USB3 Root Hub component.

So that's it: the expresscard reader itself can die. Who knew?
