Hi all. My m15x started having random shutdowns (like power is cut) a couple days ago. I thought it was overheating so I took an air duster to the vents, tried a repaste, and pointed a fan at it while it was running. However none of these have had any effect on stopping these shutdowns. Since then, I have swapped out the 920xm for the 740qm, but even that has had no effect on the random shutdowns. In addition, once it shuts off it starts trying to reboot, but never gets past the lights and fans coming on for about half a second. It will do this until I unplug it and remove the battery. I am at my wits end trying to get this sorted, and I'm starting to think it could just be that my almost 8 year old laptop is finally on its last legs. Any ideas?

Current specs: 920xm/740qm, 7970m. Using GC Extreme on both. Temps around shutdown: 78c GPU, 70c CPU (920xm), 63c (740qm)

    It's probably the motherboard failing.

Thanks. I'll swap the original 5850 back into it when I get home from work this evening, and see if that fixes it. If it is the motherboard, how difficult of a replacement is that?

Depends on you experience with laptops, but I think most people here would agree that the M15X is very easy to work on. Definitely one of the easiest laptops I've ever disassembled and I've disassembled a lot. :D
