Newb here again. (sorry) but amongst others i'm trying to run SWTOR on my M15x. I've got the i7 740QM with the GTX 260M, 6gb ram. I recently reformatted my PC and everything is about as old as it was when I got it. Reset to factory settings.

I think I updated my BIOS once when I first got my laptop because it wasn't running correctly it ended up getting returned and I now have this one. Just curious what things I should be updating to get better performance out of my laptop if there is anything at all?

First option, since you are looking into gaming is the gpu upgrade to either the 6970m/6990m. Second, I'd say would be the ssd. Then the cpu upgrade to the 920xm.

    GPU >> $325-450
    SSD >> $200-350 (depending on size/brand)
    CPU >> $250-300

But in all honesty, if you're gonna be dropping that kind of coin, you could consider waiting for ivy bridge + nvidia 6xx/amd 7xxx.
