Today, we had pc fair in my area. Representatives from Dell (i assume as it was Dell booth) were there so i went to en-quire about warranty extension. The guy said that its not worth buying Alienware laptops. I asked him why and he said bla bla which doesnt make sense. I told him that this laptop can be upgraded without voiding the warranty and he was shocked. He said he worked for 2 years and never heard this before (apart RAM). He went on saying how the motherboard processor and graphic card are attached. I was like , dude, you can change the processor and the dedicated(emphasized on this word) graphic card. I asked him have you ever opened one, he said yes and hard to open it o_O".

Edit: he doesnt even know M15x is dropped from production. =.="

So i want to ask, does it void my warranty if i upgrade stuff (apart RAM in it)?

Generally yes. Unless it gets upgraded by a Dell technician... But in some countries (like the USA) some reps are selling GPUs without sending a technician, and let you do it yourself, that's great!

I called Dell several times, and the answer was everytime the same... if you upgrade it yourself, the warranty is void. I said ok, send me the GPU without technician (I didn't want to pay so much) but they even refused to sell anything without technician, lol.

Anyway, let assume you exchange the CPU yourself... and some time later your GPU dies. You call Dell, they send a technician to replace the GPU. He will not notice that you changed the CPU, he won't check whether you did so and even if he noticed this somehow, I'm sure he wouldn't care at all.
The technicians are not working directly by Dell, they get hired.

And if you ever have to return your machine for further examination or similar, you can still just put the old parts back.

You can't really damage the system by exchanging GPU/CPU as long as you know what you're doing, working slow and carefully.

Well, another knowledgeable Dell rep. I tell you the World is being run over by stupid Dell reps...and you can find it in plenty over here in India. Lol. :D

Of course, you can upgrade a M15x. You can put SSDs in there, upgrade the CPU and the GPU and even the screen if you like. Only catch is you are supposed to keep the original parts that your computer is shipped with if in case anything ever goes wrong with the system. Other than that, I think upgradeability is what makes an AlienWare unique. ;)

I even spoke to this knowledgeable rep from Australia who told me to use Throttlestop to make the most out of my 940XM and he suggested me MSI Afterburner for the GPU. ;)

If only all Dell Reps were like him.... Or am I Dreaming...in mid daylight. :D

Well Indiran we're both from Malaysia. I guess you should know that the 'skils' of the techs aren't up to the standard.

Call the Dell My line and request to talk to the Tech Executive. That's how I make sure I got someone who knows what he's dealing with, rather than some new-guy.

Those baboons become a lot more knowledgable if you dangle a banana in front of 'um. Trust, next time the fair comes round go pack a fruit basket and watch the fun begin.
