    Hello guys,
Iam new on the forum, and i have been reading about the upgrades to 16gb of ram in this laptop, even thou the specs says that max ram in this model is 8gb.
I have the i7-720qm version, what should i do to upgrade my laptop?

and one more question, i use my laptop to play some hardcore games, do u guys recomend me to upgrade the ram, or switch the hard drive for a ssd?

For some hardcore games upgrade your gpu and cpu. More than 8gb ram will not bring you any extra speed.

First of all, WELCOME TO NBR!
To be quite honest with you, none of those 2 parts will increase the gaming performance on your machine. The SSD will help with loading times while more RAM will just let you do more tasks at the same time. A new GPU or CPU would be the best bet. Even though the highest officially supported card is the AMD 5950 we've seen some success stories on this forum with the newest 7970m. I would recommend you to check the tutorials and decide whether this is what you want and need for your Alienware or not.

As stated by chopsy and Porras all an SSD and 16GB of ram will do is allow you to do a lot more tasks and load programs and games a lot faster too. To be honest, 8GB of RAM is more than enough for todays needs and requirements in terms of normal usage and gaming unless you use a lot of high intensity software. You should definately get a new CPU/GPU, if money is no issue I would recommend a GTX 680M and a i7 920/940XM combo. You would destroy all games today at high/ultra quality with ease, I would also recommend getting an SSD anyway as it just makes everything you do just so much smoother and faster. I have just upgraded to a Samsung 840 Pro and it has been the biggest improvement I seen in terms of upgrade to my laptop. Once you go SSD you will never want to see or hear a mechanical hard drive ever again!

The first gen i7 mobile CPUs have a PAE of 36 bits. That's good for addressing exactly 8GB of memory, that's it.
Installing 16GB will boot and work okay, until you use more than 8GB. Then you'll have a BSOD pretty soon. There's a reason why Dell says it only supports 8GB, cause that's true. It's a hardware limit you can't get around.

I have 16Gb and I'm doing 3D rendering on my M15x, so pretty much all the time I'm pushing the 16Gb to the limit... I'm yet to see a BSOD.

Buy yourself a 860m first. 920xm second. For gaming that is.

Nevermind, my bad. Theoretically it should go up to 64GB. Still, Intel lists 8GB as maximum supported amount of memory. Are you sure it really uses all of the 16GB? And not only 8 and windows fails to display it properly?

Many seem to have done the upgrade so I guess it is successful. I would also assume that those that bothered to upgrade needed it? Kind of a waste of money otherwise lol

I have never considered it as I don't need such a large amount of ram.

What is the current fastest (cas timings wise) ram compatible with the M15x now svl7? That is more interesting to me :D

My ram runs at 1333 CL7. Still have a kit if you want one.

Is that a 4GB kit or 8GB kit? I researched this 6 months back and then only 4GB kit was available in CAS 7. Do you know if this is changed?

What is the performance difference you have seen vs normal CAS 9 that I currently have? I am very interested in your offer!!
