Hello all, I would like to upgrade my Alienware M15x and the power supply. I'm currently using a 150psu on my m15x. I notice my blue ring have gone off. So I think is failing on me so might want to go for a 240psu so I can oc the 940xm n my 6970m if I'm buying the 940xm.
Might want to change to 940xm. I have a mixed feeling, should I change my DVD drive to Blu ray or a ssd drive.!?

A 240 psu won't allow your laptop to get more power because that is limited by the motherboard. The only thing it would help with is having less shutdowns, and you'll have a cooler psu.

If you have a need for the blu ray then go for that upgrade. Or if you see more benefit in adding the ssd as your OS drive and the hdd as a secondary drive then do that. The ssd option makes more sense imo.

You would get the best upgrade performance from an ssd, if u upgrade your psu to a 240 u still wont be able to put more power into ur laptop, but since your psu is failing it would be a nice upgrade as it will run cooler(psu) and shouldn't trip while benching

So if I get the 240psu it will run cooler compared to mine currently which is freaking hot when touched? And if I am going to change the DVD drive into a sad drive do I need to raid it?
And ya I cant seems to find a 3 pin psu that will work in Singapore :(

U can only replace the ssd with the hdd, if u want to keep your hdd then u need to exchange the dvd for the hdd,

these statments are not totally true. Since upgrading my PSU to the 240w PSU I have been able to squeeze a little more power out of my laptop. But since you are also running the 6970m you will come to a wall where you have to choose which you want overclocked the CPU or the GPU cause thats too much powerdraw on the motherboard. The only plus to having the larger PSU is that it will be able to push more then the 150w PSU. I also was having the problem that when I OC bith the CPU and GPU just above 200w powerdraw my PSU would fail. But the statement about the performance boost fro a SSD is 100% true I love the one I replaced.

yup once u upgrade ur HDD into a SSD u can see most improvement out of ur system like example super fast boot up.

oh ya can someone recommend me a hdd adapter? since i got a few extra internal hdd to use as a storage. am going to put it into a Express card with dual 3.0 usb port.

@kurtH what I was saying is that he can't put more power into his laptop even with a 240 psu, because the motherboard would limit it. I believe we are saying the same thing. As for him getting more power out of his laptop, could just be him having less shutdowns because the adapter wont trip. But either way I don't think he would be able to add an overclock to justify getting more power out of his laptop from a larger psu
