I have the old M15x with the 720QM, 5850M and 4GB Ram. What GPU should I consider that will run my games at alot better framerates...while keeping cool and not kiling my wallet. I'm not looking for like a 20% increase,,,I'd like more if possible.

Not sure prices but you might find a gtx 765m taken from a new Alienware, someone looking to upgrade straight away.

AMD 7970M, Gtx 680M, gtx 770M, gtx 780M are all excellent choices so if you can get any of these under $300 that should be good. Anyone feel free to correct me.

The amd 7970M seems a tad expensive at the moment (probably due to fact the amd hasn't bought out any new cards that are better yet) the 770M seems to be more on the money interestingly. You can with OCing reach 7970M performance levels quite easily.

Either way. With either either 770M or 7970M you are looking at closer to 100% increase in performance especially if you OC a little.

It's crazy how people continue to upgrade their m15x after so many years. Love this laptop, never gets old.

And hopefully we'll see good mileage from Nvidia's Maxwell architecture which promises similar or better performance to current gen on smaller dies, less transistors and lower power consumption.
All this bodes well for the M15x for years to come.

Then again I prefer AMD because Nvidia just charge too much! No AMD offering worries me in this respect! Expect to have to pay $1000 dollars for the maxwell 880M/980M

Of course but I wouldn't be interested in that. Maxwell gtx 870m or 970m (if 8xxM is a rebadge) should offer interesting performance, lower temps and more over clocking headroom. Probably just build a desktop soon anyway

Our limitation will be the processor and the memory speed... :(

The processor is still plenty powerful for a single GPU setup. Simply set it to 3.2ghz effective across all cores 24/7 like I have :D

I still plan to hard volt mod it (still have the voltmeter installed into the cpu socket) when I have time perhaps sometime in spring I intend to make +100mv a reality. If this is stable any run of the mill 920xm should be able to make 3.4+ghz across all cores minimum. 940xm even more!

It is not officially supported but we've seen some really good numbers from the 7970.

Don't need to upgrade PSU if you are keeping 720QM. Higher power PSU only needed if you intend to get an 920/940xm and overclock. Temps are good if you undervolt 7970M to 0.975v @stock clocks.
With a cooling mod like the one linked in my sig I can run a nice overclock and still keep temps below 70 degrees.

A 680m would be a great option. The 7970m would be my second choice. The 680m should be priced lower now since the 780m is currently the high end card and the 880m should be released soon as well.

I have tried trust me. 200mv worked first time and is NOT sustainable at all! 100mv is more tricky. Doesn't seem to want to work. I haven't time nor energy to open up and operate again at the moment.
