I personally upgraded from 260m to 6970m and BD3 runs wonderfully, except I'm having terrible crashing issues that I don't know why. However, both 6970m and 6990m are supposed to be very good upgrades to aim for.

What sort of settings are you looking for in those 2 games? The 2 best options for you are the 6970m/6990m.

For the sake of an original suggestion, there are GTX 570m available from taobao in china.

Also there are ES 480m on Ebay for 400$ but on best offer.

I'm looking for simply better FPS. I'm playing BF3 at the lowest settings to ensure top FPS but I'd like better visuals. I also think skyrim lags a little and looks a little ugly on lower settings.

you should easily be able to get medium/high settings in bf3 native res. If you want more gpu power than go for 6970m or 6990m. Follow the thread for it to help guide you with installation/problems/etc.

Have you tried overclocking the 5850M? There's a lot of power in the card that is not available at stock settings. Try TriXX ( https://www.sapphireselectclub.com/ssc/TriXX/TriXX.aspx) and set to 800/1000 and ease the voltage up to 1.05v. Should make a noticeable difference. All TriXX o/c'ing is driver based, so everything is reset to stock when you reboot (or click on reset within TriXX). No danger.
