Hi I'm new to upgrading my 5 year old 15x, previously own by a friend which he had parts upgraded but I'm thinking of streaming league with the laptop which I had tried and result weren't too good. Fps dropped a lot when I start recording usually runs ok when normal game play. I understand there are ways to improve performance, but I was wondering with the current spec I have right now would I be better off getting new parts or a new computer.

    Spec:
    Nvidia gtx460m
    i7 Q840
    Ssd 256gb

Mainly what should I upgrade to? And what is best currently.

    Thank you :D

Get a Core i7 920XM or a 940XM processor and for video card options you can go for a dirt cheap 5850m/5870m which I'd say is better than a 460m, ultimately a 680m or 7970m would be better and if you really wanna dish out the cash get a 970m. You'll need a bigger powersupply though to support the upgrades.

Thanks for the info. But the 970m can work on the 15x plug and play or do I need to do anything else?
I think I have the power supply upgraded too not sure if it's the right one.
Where can I find these parts?
I'm thinking of the 920xm and 970m would the price be ok to buy now or wait for it to drop if it's too pricey then I might just get the 7970m instead.

    You should use a 240w atleast for a 970m...

Here on the forums, eBay and a few other vendors is a great place to start.

That powersupply appears to be 150w...

Totally agreed. Seems like a 150W supply and the best places to get started are those 2.

    Watts = voltage x amps

    19.5 x 7.7 = 150.15 so it's definitely a 150w supply.

When people say plug and play that is a slight over simplification. It isn't desktop level plug and play.
The process for the 970m is pretty simple though.
A matter of switching out the heatsink which includes application of thermal pads (either what comes with the 970m or your own) and repasting.
You should also first do a clean uninstall of your current video drivers before installation and afterwards install the modded versions available for Alienware at Tech Inferno. svl7 vbios mod also advised.
You'll also need to overclock the 920xm to limit bottlenecking.

All really easy things to do.

970m can be found on RJTech. Its a clevo version, works great.
Its a little pricey but amazing.
