So a tech came to replace my speakers again and now they're fine. Then I told him about the dust under the screen and somehow he got the screen assembly apart without even taking off the service cover. I suspect he effed something up but everything seems to check out....

    Still got the dust though....

I think he meant that the dell tech tried to repair the screen without the service cover (the one on the base of the laptop). Thats not possible cause the screws to remove the screen are actually located either under the touch panel or the battery (can't remember), you can remove the screws for the screen without removing the service panel but you can't disconnect the screen completely cause there are some cables under the keyboard which can only be removed after removing the service panel.

uh the service panel doesn't have to be taken off to take the screen apart. only need to take off the touch control cover screw under the battery and everything else is on top.
edit: my mistake some of the cables go under the touch pad too, so you do have to remove the service panel to remove the touchpad screws.

If he removed the screen assembly, it is possible to do so without removing the service cover.

When you remove the battery, the 2 outer screws hold the touch control cover in place. Once you remove that and remove the thin cable, there are 3 screws to the keyboard visible. You can remove those 3 screws and unplug the keyboard cables, you will have access to the cable routing, etc. No need to remove the palm rest or the service cover to my knowledge.

I dont think the cables actually go that far down to the touchpad assembly. I think they are only under the keyboard if I remember correctly.
