So I figured I would start a thread discussing Windows 8 on the M15X for anyone who feels like talking about it. I'll be getting my copy tomorrow and installing it on a seperate partition of my hard drive--I guess I'm just going to use the windows 7 drivers? What is everyone else doing? Does anyone even plan on getting Windows 8?

I DO NOT want this to be a discussion about whether or not Win 8 will be good or bad as an OS upgrade, I'm just curious what other people are doing.

most will be waiting until benefits or bugs of 8 are made clear over 7. that's what I'm doing anyways :)

Everything is working for me in 8. In fact, 8 runs better than 7 for me so I kept it. All of my drivers are working(used 7 64-bit and some I found for 8 64-bit) and all of my apps are working still too.(Had to run one app in compatibility mode for windows 7, other than that works good)
    The M15x runs it flawlessly.

Yup, I can customize my lights. I think all of the command center works although I just use it to change the lighting colors.

    Hopefully you like it. :)

Most of the drivers are installed by themselves, the only drivers I think I needed were:

    Alienware Command Center Software

IDT Audio Driver(Enables the SRS controls in the control panel)

    Intel Chipset Driver

Media Card Reader(I like to have non-microsft drivers)

Touchpad Drivers(These are better than Dell's and support multi-touch functions!)

Intel Gigabit Ethernet(More features than stock microsoft driver)

    Dell Bluetooth Driver

Intel 5300 Wi-Fi(I didn't really need this one it was already installed)

Video Driver 306.97 WHQL for NVIDIA Cards Only

AMD 12.10 WHQL Drivers for AMD Cards Only or AMD 12.11 Beta 7 Drivers

MY other half has it on her new HP laptop and I dont think ill upgrade. Not much works on the new front page thing (even MS office doesnt yet), so she spends all her time on the traditional desktop.

Looks great for touchscreen things though

Everything works fine for me that did in 7 including office. I use the desktop instead of metro as well since for me metro is just a start menu. Once I click on the app I need I'm mostly on the desktop.

    Hi everyone,

I have W8 from a couple of week and superficially looks good, but in some conditions I have seen some problems. For example, working with firefox the system do not use power processor or memory ram well, I observe "throttles" in youtube videos o webpages with many images in movement. Also AMD drivers (updates to latest version) work good for the mostly tasks but they dont give support for 3D video. I have an SONY HMZ-T1 and I can´t use it to watch BD-R 3D films, even using specific software (PowerDVD 12 or ArchSoft Total Media Theatre 5). Other software to play video like VLC o WMP-c, dont work as well because there are not appropriate codecs.

From microsoft support is saying to me that windows 8 have no codecs anymore, so users depends of third software but, what can I do if software does not work?

I will appreciate any help, thanks.

My system is an M15x AMD6970m 8gb ram.
    Sorry for my eng.

I think Aliensense is a separate program not available for download.

Download MPC-HC it should allow you to play your files. Also use Google Chrome over firefox, its a better browser imo.

Thanks! I´m going to try it with m15x and HMZ-T1.

I seen the combination keys, ctrl+F4 or F5 doesn't change display brightness, my display is always on max level and I can´t change on windows 8 settings.

OK, seeing that no one replied to my thread, I would like to ask here - My laptop just won't read the Windows 8 Pro DVD. Can anyone help? Every other DVD works fine. Please!

Yep, is weird and yes, command center works fine, alienfx, volume -+, stealth mode, etc.. but display brightness doesn't work

WMP-HC works fine, and now PowerDVD 12 is working well, but for some reason GPU acceleration is no working and that´s making some BD-3D´s can´t play, for example The Avengers BD-R 3D. In case to play it with WMP-HC movie is converted in 2D but I can´t choose langaje or subtitles.

Hi guys. Just an update to let you know that I was able to solve the problem myself. I just made an image of the Windows DVD, and I ran the setup via my USB stick.

Windows 8 is now installed in my laptop and it works great!!!

Thank you to all who helped.

I am trying to track down the exact card. Is there a good way to find out? Windows loads Broadcom 802.11n drivers by default.

Check in device manager under network adapters.

Press the physical start button on the computer>type "devmgmt.msc">press enter

I just wanted to let you know, the reason you cannot adjust brightness is because of a AMD driver issue. You will need to wait for a proper driver by AMD to be released to regain the brightness control. Everyone with windows 8 and an amd card with 12.10/12.11 drivers are experiencing these issues including m17x r2/r3 users.

Some network cards need a Win 8 specific driver.

I'm on Windows 8 right now, easiest upgrade I've ever done. I only had to reinstall Catalyst, so make sure to do that if you don't do a fully clean upgrade. As far as Windows 8, I haven't seen any drop in gaming performance and I've seen increases in boot times and SSD use. I actually love Windows 8, I'm not sure what everyone was complaining about but it's so clean and nice looking with almost no downside besides a few things I have to get used to and if I can't they can be changed, like getting back the start menu.
