    Hi all,

I am getting random ping spikes around every 30 seconds with windows 8. It is always in the same order, I have ruled out the wireless card (by buying a new one) and It happens on all types of networks in different places so its not not the router.

Its doesn't seem to happen on a wired connection and doesnt happen when I have a average usage of my connection eg. running skype, however for online games like battlefield etc. every 30 seconds i am lagging alot.

Here is a picture of the lag spikes I am referring too. Untitled.png

I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 a few months ago and noticed once i starting playing multiplier games that i would lag a lot every 30 seconds or else get kicked for high ping. I thought it was a windows 8 driver problem so i tried to update the drivers on my intel 5300 wifi card, intel do not officially support the 5300 under windows 8 so I bought a 6300 ultimate n and updated the drivers but still no luck, the issue is still there, always running.

how did i re-image the system, never heard of this. edit: just googled this, seems its just the same as a clean install, that would be my last option really, I just dont want to reinstall the os for it to pop back up .

It may be the Windows 8 Network Manager that's not working fine. The m15x is not one of the recommended platforms for Windows 8, therefore issues may arise.

Try to check your system with DPC Latency Checker _http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

Just to close this thread, I got a new 1tb hybrid drive and went back to my windows 7 pro 64 os and the issue is no longer there, Alienware should really try and sort this issue out.

I too run Windows 8 and didn't even realize I was getting the same ping spikes until I came across this thread. I can confirm that the registry edit fix worked for me as well. Thank you for sharing, jdyck!

This is a better solution: Home-WLAN Optimizer - Optimize wireless gaming, audio and video streaming...

"Disable background scan" is the same as setting ScanWhenAssociated to 0 in the Registry. The difference being that the manual Registry change may affect roaming because it disables all scans while connected to a network, even ones triggered manually, unless you disconnect from the network. Meanwhile, setting it in WLAN Optimizer will force a scan whenever you open your wireless menu in Windows. This is really a much more elegant solution.

Furthermore, the "enable streaming mode" option is there for some hardware and driver configurations that aren't fixed by disabling background scanning alone. My once-per-minute ping spikes are fixed only when I tick both.

Read this if you want to know the technical details behind why these ping spikes happen.

WLAN Optimizer works for all Windows OSes from XP to 8.1. I've been using it for years and it has been invaluable.

Disclaimer: Not a shill, just wanna spread the word on this little free program that has helped me out a ton over the years. :)

Well done guys, just randomly came back across this thread i started over a year ago, and it seems that the solution posted by Levono above is a new development, i'm glad i wasnt the only one experiencing the issue, i thought i was at the time and it must have been my hardware. I'm currently not able to try out the fix but i look forward to trying it over the next few days! I'll keep ye informed to see if it solves my issue,
