Would I notice much of a difference when running different forms/versions of AutoCAD and autocad 3d?

They both say "Qualification Sample, best version of ES," are they safe to use?

Yup they are safe to use. I run a ES 920xm and mine happens to run cooler than most OEMs lol.

You will definitely see a big difference in any CPU intensive program as you can OC them easily via throttlestop program.

For example if I run my 920xm at just 15x at 2ghz a full HD video encode will run at around 0.10-0.15fps. If however I clock it up to 3ghz or more across all 4 cores the peformance jumps by a good 45%!

Basically even if you have the 840qm you are looking at up to 50% increase in performance. I and most here on the forum will recommend you to get a 920xm. The 940xm just isn't worth the higher price tag and both are equally OCable. Before you get to the limits of either chip you will get to the limits of your cooling anyways.
