In February I received my m15x and I had the optional bluray slotload player facvtory installed. I just tried to actually play a bluray dvd and it would not be recognized with powerdvd 9.5 nor would it be recognized with media player.

I went to dell support with my service tag and it said my player is a CA10N. In reality my player is a CA30N so I was unable to update the firmware if that was the cause.

I then downloaded the trial of powerdvd 10 ultra and had no issues playing a bluray dvd.

In searching, it appears that media player is not able to play blurays and there is some question as to if powerdvd9.5 can play them.

Is anyone able to play blurays with powerdvd9.5 and if not, is it usual to get a syhstem with hardware that cannot be used? What should I do?

I could buy the full version of powerdvd10 but even with the "upgrade discount" it is still $50

a possible reason is its all about anti piracy from the blu ray companies, some are worse than others and the update the codecs of the blu rays often Microsoft says it cant afford to buy them all.Try older blu rays and see if they work. It totally sucks and is the reason i don't have blu ray on my laptop.

I had a problem getting to play new blu rays too with the original software.
I have powerdvd 10 and it seems to play the newest blu rays. I think alienware should supply us with new software since we did pay for the upgrade.
You can get powerdvd 10 "cheaper" else where.
