I burned an iso file to a cd (Crucial SSD firmware) the instruction were to boot from a cd with the bios in IDE. The only options were AHCI or ATA. Isn't ATA the same thing as IDE? Anyway the cd wouldn't boot it went right into windows and of course crashed not being in AHCI mode. Any help would be appreciated.

The more I read about both ATA and AHCI, the more I keep seeing XP and Vista referenced.
USMC, Do you have any links of either mode working on Windows7? I cant find any.
I do assume you are still trying to 'defrag an SSD on a Windows7 Alienware machine'.

When I go to Dell's site to download drivers and enter my tag # it gives me a page with Windows Vista 64 bit with a drop down menu which include 7. I bought this machine with 7 pre-installed on it. I'm not looking to defrag I just wanted to install the latest firmware for this SSD.

Have you checked boot order or tried to use the boot menu if there is any?

Also, is there any particular reason that you want to update the firmware of your SSD? Are you experiencing any issues in that area? Make sure that you have backed up anything important.

I echo doing a backup. I did a firmware upgrade on my G.skill only to reboot and get an "Operating System not found" message. I had to reinstall Windows. Good thing I keep my data on a separate disk. Like namaiki said, it may not be necessary to do a firmware update unless you are experiencing issues. Sometimes new updates introduce new problems.

I set the boot menu to boot from a cd but like I said it goes into windows and then crashes because it's in ATA mode in the bios. No I'm not having any issues so I guess I'll just let sleeping dogs lie. Thanks
