hey all, my computer started this problem awhile back whenever i try playing games or watching movies there appears to be vertical lines through the screen, this happened after i installed a windows update, i deleted the update and it still happened dell said it was either the card or a software error, so i reinstalled windows with the same problems. the lines go away when i switch to the windows 7 basic screen outlook any help at all would be greatly appreciated

You don't specify what video card you have - but in any case, it might be helpful to try a different video driver. If your card is Nvidia, the 275.27 drivers have been particularly stable. If the problem persists after a clean install of a known good video driver, that would suggest you may have a hardware problem. BTW, do the lines move, or are they always in the same location?

im wondering if the card could have been partially dislodged,
else it does sound like a bad card.
a tech support call cant hurt, while others in forums put in their experiences.

    btw- welcome the the forums
the 'signature' is edited in the 'user cp' tab just above the add at the top left. just copy and paste one that looks close and edit it :). -hubs-

hub, the 5850 is a great card.
a major overhaul from the 240m
if you prefer nvidia (for cuda) then the 460m is awesome as well, performing on par with the stock 5850.

if you feel like getting your hands dirty, the 6970 mod is looking like the best option.

please note however that if the card is not from dell, chances are it may be a little tricky to install and have some issues (minor/major depending on your pov)
    issues include,
sound through hdmi not working (5870 and 6970, 6970 fixable with dell bios flash, 5870 will brick if flashed with dell bios... not recommended to try)
fan control not working, stays at max speed - need manual fix from hwinfo32 software (6970m)
drivers may be more difficult to install requiring text editing to ini files in some cases.

however the dell versions work perfectly but may be harder to acquire and/or more expensive.

depending on your hardware/software knowledge your choice will differ. for me, i'm going with the 6970, probably from that ebay guy. i don't mind controlling the fan through software and having to flash a bios. but you may mind, so just a heads up before taking the plunge.

just remember however, no matter which way you go, you will see a massive improvement over the 240m... if performance is acceptable for you atm, then you can't go wrong with any of the above cards.
