hi guys....on my graphic card the thermal compound im using is coolaboratory's liquid metal pad
been using this for almost a yr,at 1st the temp was reli gd
idle at 40, max load on 75
but till after sum shutdown during gaming
i notice that the temp of the card is going crazy high
but its weird, according to my knowledge.
all three temps of dispio, memio, shader were all on the DIE
here's the deal, the dispio, shader were all working fine
max load never goes over 70...but at the mean time that memio's temp is insanely high, during game play it can goes over 104c!
i tried to repaste, coz these pad im using is real thin, not like other compounds r liquid, they r just like papers,so it might not thick enough to touch the heatsink
but even i tripple it up(the first time i put them on is also 3pieces so i think is enough?)
the temp of memio still out of control
anyone have any idea about this?
    --------------------
    now the temps are
    dispio 60 memio 89 shader 68
    gpu usage 60%
    clock 750/1000, stock voltage

Are you saying that you use thermal pads on the gpu die (the center metal part)? If so, remove that and use a thermal paste such as mx-4 which is highly recommended.

While the laptop is open, check the vent for the gpu to make sure there is no dust built up. Use some compressed air to clean it out, and make sure you don't blow the dust back into the laptop.

Recheck your temps and see how it is. MX-4 takes like a day or two to cure to get a proper steady temp.

well, that pad is not those pad that uses on memory module.
its just the name is "pad" its thermal compound actually, just not liquid,go google it and u'll know wt im talking about
vent is clean i vancuum it every 2weeks
and these pads is more powerful than mx4 which its 2degrees lower than mx-4,i just checked even its thin but it shud have direct contact with the heatsink, dun know wt's going on cause i 've been using these pads for a yrs already,it just suddenly happened

Crazy... I'd say make sure your heatsink is making proper contact with the die. Remove the liquid metal pad, clean heatsink and die and then apply a small dot of thermal paste on the die. Mount the heatsink, fix the screws and then carefully remove it again, if there's a severe contact issue you'll see an uneven spread of the paste across the die/heatsink.

Also I have to advise you against using 3 pads to make it thicker, it's self-defeating... if you think you need more pressure on the die then check out the little backplate mod I recently posted in the 6970m section.

i just wanted to add that in every single video card i've had, the memio has always been a few degrees hotter under full load (sometimes upto 10C)
and yes its the reason for your shutdowns, those shutdowns are saving your card from being cooked.

i noticed this when trying to run dual monitors on the 6990m, almost impossible without overheating and recently i've had a few issues with heat and BF3/Skyrim.
i've resorted to monitoring for now, i may try the heatsink mod (waiting for a second heatsink through ebay as i type this) but i suspect i may just need to live with it for a bit longer.

oh you might want to downclock the clocks a little to get the temps under control first.
and yes the liquidpro thermal pad is designed for cpu's, it's not a thermal pad in the traditional sense.... id say it falls under exotic cooling material.
when you vacuum the vents, do you remove the and clean between the fan and heatsink?
it tends to build up dust in that small gap.

    ya i've clean there too
but it was running fine with the same clock...
or is it pad is just not working good
other then the pad, which thermal compound is the best atm?
anything better than mx-4?is it icd7?but i heard its so hard to apply

@sv17 thx man, will look into that

there is also ic diamond 24, but it is more expensive and i believe has a longer curing time.

i thought it was just a weight difference (bigger package) 7 carat of weight vs 24.
lol and how would the 24 carat be less pure?
i'm pretty sure they're the same stuff.

    just bought the mx-4
finally i figured out why is it so hot...
its just all as SV17's thoughts!!
    the pressure is not enough
the proof is i made a finger print on the right side of the DIE when i applying the mx-4.
then i run 3dmark to see wt happens.....
and yes, memio is 98 degrees again, others are fine
then i take out the heatsink and find out....my finger print is still there
which means the heatsink doesnt have contact with that part of the die
otherwise it should be smear off
then i press on the heatsink very hard until it is smear
the strength needed to do this is far beyond the screws can do
then i try to apply more mx-4 on it,make it thick enough to have contact with the heatsink
now its fine i get 80c max when running 3dmark vantage with 50mhz more clocked, now its 800/1000
but im just wondering applying more is it a good solution?

@sv17 i couldnt find the mod post, can u give me the link?

You don't want too much paste on there that it is spreading out past the die. You want just enough to cover it in a nice even layer (not to thick/thin). Also without air bubbles. If you are getting max 80c then your paste job is fine.

Also when applying pressure to smear the paste, don't apply too much as you can risk breaking something. :p

now playing bf3 for 2hrs the max become 83
    and the 920xm 25/25/25/25 90tdp 70tdc is maxed on 82
    is that normal?
