I am looking to upgrade my 620m to a 920xm. I found a 920 on ebay for $375 but I don't know if it is compatible. I don't know what to look at in terms of socket type. I called a dell rep and he told me the socket on the 920xm is a G1 socket. on my m15x, CPU-Z tells me mine is 1156 LGA. The dell rep said the 920 should be compatible. I'm confused with the socket types. Can any body tell me for sure if this is compatible with my system. Thank you in advance!

Any i7 920XM would be great as long as it is XM. I would take dttran83 up on his offer. Tis like match made in heaven!
Wish I could be as lucky, was late to my ebay auction of a Cooler Master SF 19 and missed it by 3 seconds, could've had it as well!

I think with a 940xm and a 6970m is bit to much for our system can handle. I mean it run perfectly find together but I think with a lower cpu power I can push my 6970m more. That is just what I thinking, so I'm taking a gamble here hopefully I can push my 6970m more with a lower power cpu.

Well, I have absoultely no power issue so far. I'm watching the power draw from time to time while gaming. Only when benching I'm hitting a roof, the 3dMark11 combined test draws about 160-170W when having the GPU at 830 core and the CPU at about 23x across all cores...

OC the GPU doesn't increase the power consume a lot, but really pushing the CPU will, at least when the load is 100%... but so far I didn't run into problems. Anway, I absolutely don't need to OC the GPU while gaming atm... games run perfectly maxed out :D

Don't you think you might have more power with the 940xm and 6970m without OCing the GPU than you would with the 620m and an OC'd GPU?

Not to sabotage the offer or anything, I was just curious about the logic as well ;)

Yea it work perfectly find, I can play all my game at max setting with 60fps plus. The other reason is I want to use the extra cash to purchase a new ssd. I had to sold my old ssd to get the 6970m and I'm really missing the speed of a ssd. The momentus XT is just not cutting it :).

Haha I know right. I'll be missing running those x26 across the board. I play alot of Starcraft II, you think there a big affect in performance with a lower CPU?

Haven't played starcraft II, but I heard it's really CPU intese... so I guess you'll definitely notice this, even with a 6970m. The i7 620m is a dual core... as long as the game can take advantage of four cores you'll definitely see the difference.

I had my intel 160gb SSd for a year before I sold it to get the 6970m. My next ssd have to be atleast 256gb.

Of course, you could simply limit the speed of the 940xm to, say, 20,20,20,20, or 28,20,20,20. THis would reduce the cpu power use significantly.

StarCraft II is rather CPU intense, for the record.

Thank you everyone who has confirmed that it will fit, but.. why are their so many different socket names for what is essentially the same socket! Makes no sense to me... or the dell rep I asked about it.

Well, the ES procs are the "Engineering Sample" procs- they're the same as the regular ones, they're just sample units that don't tend to have warranties. But they're the same processor, just a different name.

    Sockets supported:
    i7 620m: BGA1288, PGA988
    i7 920xm: PGA988

Anyway, it will fit and work.
