hi guys i just got my 6970m today and installed it.. big thanks to slv7 for all the guides and help, and the others on this forum..

i installed the 11.5a drivers and followed the guides but now the temps are idling at 50-53c and when gaming its 80-85c, but when i game on cod black ops the game is a bit laggy.. plus 3dmark vantage just stops mid way.. it didnt do that with my 260m, plus metro2033 went missing, dunno why..

im grateful to anybody shedding light to my minor problem

which drivers r u guys using that r stable and fast?

can i use the ati driver? official i mean

What are your M15x's specs? What kind of 6970M are you using? What BIOS are you using?

The Cat 11.5 drivers are fine, generally both stable and fast. Of course you can use the ATI/AMD official/reference drivers. Did you do a clean driver install when installing the 11.5 set? (i.e., remove old drivers through Install Manager in Control Panel, driver sweeper in safe mode, CCleaner for the registry, particularly important if Dell drivers were previously installed.)

Many are now using the Cat 11.7 drivers, but that is not your problem. The 11.5's are probably best for the moment.

Your temps sound typical and do not sound like the problem. Vantage can be a tough test for the 6970M, particularly if heavily overclocked or when paired with a 920/940xm, because the power demands can overwhelm the PSU. We need more and better information. Where in Vantage does it "just stop" and how -- black screen/shutdown, crash to desktop (display driver has stopped responding . . .), BSOD? What does it mean when you say that Metro 2033 went missing? At launch, during play, how?

We'll get it working. The 6970M has been a very successful addition to the M15x, but it sometimes requires a bit of adjustment.

Make sure you have powerplay enabled in CCC (and stealth mode disabled).

ok.. i have stealth mode disabled and powerplay enabled. my m15x specs are 940xm, 8gb ram, 6970m, 1080p screen.. my 6970m is from dell, the bios im using for my laptop is the a09 one.

i might have not cleaned the old nvidia driver well when i installed the 6970m.. i'll try to clean it now..

the exact point that vantage just stopped responding was when its trying to load the plane sequence core test thing(sorry for the name).. it says display stop responding..

metro 2033 was playing fine, when i swapped the 6970m in, i was gonna try it the files just went missing.. maybe its got nothing to do with this..

thanks revelator and slv7 in advance

i had the same issue when i oc my 5850m to a desktop 5770's clock, after i underclock it a bit it went well, but yours on stock clock so it might be the heat?try to replace the thermal pad on the memory module with a better one eg:ek ,seems lot of 6900 series on m15x r a bit hot on memory modules

heat is fine i think.. idle at 50 max.. and load at 82-85c.. might be the voltage.. anyways to tweak the voltage and lower it? but everybody else seems to run fine with similar setup

I recommend flashing to 1volt. This gave me a drop of around 10degrees in peak temperatures, with no (as of yet) discernible performance difference. Just to give you an idea, after the 1volt flash playing The Witcher 2 for 1 hour, the hottest temp I see (MEMIO) is about 80degrees, all other temperatures in the mid 70's.

i tried swapping my power adapter with my friends'.. and it seems to run smoother, but still lags a bit when moving fast in black ops.. but improved a lot.. cus my power adapter is a bit faulty.. so it might be the power.. but it still lags a bit.. which it shouldnt..

Be sure and keep both the 940xm and the 6970M at stock settings until you get things straightened out. The M15x should have no problem at those levels, but it will require the full capacity of your PSU. The 940xm has a stock TDP of 62W, but can require 85W-90W (or more) if heavily o/c'ed. The 6970M is a 75W card, but is reported to eat up to 100W when o/c'ed. Add in the power requirements of the monitor, motherboard and drives, and you can see that the 150W power adapter has very little operating margin, even if you have one of the good ones capable of providing bursts up to 175-180W. You simply cannot run both CPU and GPU at their maximum capabilities at the same time. Power management thus becomes a critical skill, and it's mostly a matter of trial and error. Fundamental to that is a fully functional PSU. At stock settings, you should score a little over P12,000 in Vantage. Vantage stresses both GPU and CPU, but does so separately for the most part. The crash to desktop generally means the GPU is o/c'ed too hard or it's not getting the power it needs (mostly two sides of the same coin, but not always). An over-stressed CPU will usually crash with a BSOD. Verify that your PSU is working at full capacity and stay at stock clocks until the system is stable. Your temps sound fine. Clean driver installation is important. You might even want to reinstall Windows in due course so that everything is mated to your new components, but that should not be necessary at this point.

No, complete stock 920xm / 6970m with 8.80 drivers was just about P3000, so this seems right as long as you haven't overclocked anything.

Your 3dMark11 score is dead on. A little driver tweaking in CCC will jump you to about P3500. Sounds like all is well with your new setup. Enjoy. There is much to play with.

Yep, those should do it, but they only yield about 300 points for me. I also check Enable Surface Format Optimization. Here's a straight stock run with the CCC tweaks.

Then you might be the fastest in the land. :) :)

Edit: Uh-oh, johnnyman27, just noticed that you're using a 2720QM Sandy Bridge processor, which is altogether different from the M15x's.

Well it completely disables tessellation so in games with that feature, it will have improvements at the cost of some graphics detail.

Also having problems with my 6970m and frame-rate. My PC is recognizing the card but defaults settings at lower than what I had previously had which was a 5730m. AMD said my drivers are up to date, so what is wrong? When I went onto red orchestra I could tell something was seriously up with this green fuzzy graphics thing like a malfunction or something. Need help desperately.
