A guy I know has a M15x. Not sure the year, but it has like a first gen i5 and (I think) a 240m or something. I'm not a fan of Alienware and it's too thick for my tastes but I thought it'd be a fun laptop to toy with. (Upgrade GPU, modify the cooling system, etc.) He wants $200 for it. Worth it?

It seems to be in pretty good condition, apart from the lack of a battery.

For that price I would snag it quick as long as everything else is good.

People are spending a lot more for them in parts condition. They are kind of sought after with the current lack of upgrade-ability in newer models.

If you don't get it, send me his contact info and I'll get it for myself! :)
The m15x has a lot of upgradeable parts and is a very solid machine overall.

That's incredibly cheap. Take it and run, do not look back. Even a faulty system can be sold upwards of $300 easily.

Barebones systems (No HDD, No CPU, No RAM, no GPU) retail for $400-450 alone if in good shape, and they sell rather quickly.

As UPGI2AYDD was saying, older Alienware systems have shot up in value because the new Alienware cannot be upgraded because they are pieces of s*** and are an absolute disgrace to Alienware engineering. The M15x R2 can still hold itself even to this day. Slap a 980m and an overclocked 920xm into that sucker, and it will take you to the top just like it could 5 years ago. It is no slouch.

The new Alienware are BGA only. Even the CPU is BGA'd to death.
BGA is not the future my friends.
    BGA is cancer.

Damn, I need to find $200.

Also yeah, I hate BGA CPUs. Never had any experience with an upgradable laptop GPU before. (I bought a new board for my laptop just to get a better GPU..)

    You better man.
Don't let a deal this fantastic slip out of your hands. If you don't want the 240m, I'll buy it from you as I'm looking for a new card for my P170HM :)

I don't currently have a job (16 in a couple months, I'll look for one then) and so I'm not making money very quickly. I will be mowing lawns this summer, but lawns aren't growing yet.

I want it to play with, probably not something I'd reguarly use to be honest. I'm happy with my laptop and gaming desktop. I would gladly buy it and sell it to you, if i had the money to buy it in the first place.

You need to make an investment. Buy some lawn fertilizer and spread it in all your neighbors lawns at night. :)
On the topic though, buy the m15x! You can play/fiddle with it a lot.
