    Hi friends!

Its summer here in Brazil, and the ambient temps can easily get about 38 - 40C.

The situation gets worse when I HAVE to play Fallout 4 (im a big fan), and the temps for my 680m is about 89C.

Do you think that if I use the m15x without the bottom cover, over a USB cooling pad, I can have a great temp reduction??

    Thank you!

    Thiago

Yes that will help. If cool air from a laptop cooler flows over the heatsinks, it will definitely drop your temps. You can also modify your bottom cover like this:

Kosti, interesting mod. You did it?

If the answer is yes, can you tell me:

    1. How did u make this perfect little holes in the cover?
    2. How much the temps dropped after the mod?

    Thank you! :)

    hi guys,
when i game i always use the GXT 277 cooling stand, but my CPU temperature still goes to 85->90 degrees , its still a laptop where cooling isnt very easy!

Dean de Cooman. The cpu cooling is pretty good actually. If your vents are clean, getting good airflow and have decent thermal paste applied and properly applied the stock cooling is good enough to cool the chip in excess of 3ghz under full load even in Prime 95.

Perhaps check you have done the aforementioned things! :)

I actually didn't do it myself. I bought a bunch of M15X replacement parts here and this was one of them. It is simply done with a drill. It should not be difficult to do. In the summer, I usually put this lid on. With a cooler underneath, it really helps a lot. You may also want to try cleaning and applying new thermal paste on your CPU/GPU. Something like Arctic Cooling MX-2 is a very good upgrade to the stock stuff.

Cara, eu ia adorar trocar umas ideias contigo sobre seu M15x, sou BR também e nunca conheci ninguém que também tenha um M15x, se quiser me enviar um e-mail ou whats que conversamos! 51 9244 53 77 ou [email protected] .

Hello guys sorry about re-open that again, but i really dont know what to do anymore. My 920XM temps get really high and i want to know if some one got a definitive solution for that, look my settings above, i get that temps playing dying light for about 1 hour, but my core settings are really low, if i change for 20+ for 4 active cores my temps easily get aroud 80c+ .
I'm play without bottom cover and my cooling pad give about 3 cm above the table ( thats help alot ) . What i'm doing wrong ?

Here in Brazil temps get around 30~40c everysingle day in summer. So what to do ?
What is ur settings at Throttlesop ? Mine is fine ?

When I transcode videos at x25 four cores my temps reach 90-91 degrees and stablise around there even with my cooling mod. Reducing the multiplier to x22 instantly drops temps to 80 degrees! You may have done a bad job pasting your CPU. I suggest you buy some good thermal paste like IC Diamond and use a small grain of rice size in the middle of the die. If you want even better cooling performance you should consider a mod like mine (King of Interns Style)!

    Thanks for reply fatboyslimerr!
i'm sure about my good job pasting it, i'm actually using arctic silver, next time i'll take a pic of it.
What do you think about 80~~90c ? This is really bad for 920xm or i'm wong ? We can live without problems with that?

As I said in my above post, when I'm pushing my CPU 100% @3.3Ghz (x25 four cores) my temperatures can exceed 90 degrees. However when I drop to (x22) 3Ghz still at 100% load my temperatures drop instantly to 80 degrees. You would never expect to see 100% usage during gaming and definitely not at the lower clocks you are running so it does seem your 920XM is running hot but it could just be the difference in ambient temperature. You would benefit from adding more surface area to the heatpipes as in my first picture.

Saying all of that the 920XM is a resilient chip and should be ok running at 90 degrees for extended periods of time. When you get closer to 100 degrees that is the absolute limit and I think it'll either throttle or shutdown to avoid damage. This doesn't leave you much headroom so I would suggest either modding the cooling or not overclocking past x22 on four cores!

I can confirm it is possible and totally safe to run the 920xm at full load at 25x at 98C without throttle.

When I used to encode movies years ago I did this for up to 13 hours at a time lol and managed to stabilise temps below 100C. The 920xm is VERY resilient indeed.

Basically keep it under 100C and you will be fine. Of course cooler is better but the 920xm at this point has proven incredibly robust.

As have most Intel CPUs. It is rare to see them fail.
