I have an m15x that is pretty much in mint condition. I just upgraded to an sad and put the 680m in it. It has the I5 and 4 gig of ram. Here's where I appreciate your opinions and experience. I can't find a 940xm anywhere for under 600 and their all qs chips. Rt now it runs cod ghost pretty well and crysis 3 ok. This is with high settings. Is it worth spending another 800 to upgrade cpu and ram? Should I just sell and put money into a newer model? Of course I could also go with a 920xm their going for around 250 used. If I do these upgrades will I get a couple more yrs of good gaming out of it?

Sorry to say this, but there is no noticeable difference between 920xm and 940xm to the m15x user. The extra features of the 940xm are not accessible in the extremely limited m15x BIOS. Definitely pick up a 920xm used and over clock it to 3Ghz.

Possibly also consider doing a cooling mod as me and KingofInterns have and definitely get a 210w, 240w or 330w PSU and remove the centre pin to eliminate throttling. We run most new games on very high settings, where the CPU definitely becomes a bottleneck unless running that overclock.

KoI has played Crysis 3 on insane graphics settings.

Im glad you told me that before I wasted money on a 940xm. I appreciate your help. Im considering buying the m18 or maybe waiting for the next generation. Maybe ill just pick up a 920 for now .

Good call. Beat me to it. The only thing I can think off is the 940xm ability to raise base multi even in throttlestop. However that is only perhaps good for a few extra points in benchmarks. Won't deliver more CPU power.

I am also slowly working on a cpu voltmod. Very easy to do but tricky to work out properly and get the extra voltage wanted. Once I have the kinks worked out I will post a guide up on here. It will allow the 920xm/40xm to get to 3.6ghz on all cores perfectly stably even at 100% load.

The upgrade is not worth it as stated above, it won't be a big jump.
Congratz on that awesome rig BTW :)

I assume you're talking about the jump to the 940 instead of the 920 and not the jump to a newer model? Im also looking at the new 18 because of the screen size. My eyes aren't what they used to be. Heres a question . The 2000$ base model 18 looks like decent specs. How much of a jump in gaming would that be compared to my m15x with a 920xm?

    Yes I was referring from 920 to 940 :p

Even that base model will definitely outperform the m15x. The new generation i7 is a great leap from the 920-940.

I think I may be sold on the 18. Will aw be coming out with a new model 1st quarter of 2014? Will it be better to wait?

Sure the 18 will outperform the M15x. However the 920xm OCed won't be bottlenecked in any game. What you get in the 18 is dual GPU's. Otherwise no real tangible advantage except for the additional screen real estate which you appreciate.

If you want a larger screen I would say go for it. If not then save your money.

Thanks king. I think what I may do is get the m18 . Im haggling with a guy on ebay rt now for an m18 (no scratches or bangs) it has the 4800 with the 17700 cards . We are around $2000 rt now
Its $2849 brand new. That's a decent price drop. My m15x was a refurbished and never had any issues with it. My point is at that price I can keep my m15x for portability.. leave the m18 at home for the majority of my gaming. Soon ill spend the $250 and put the 920 in m15.

You may have already made your mind up but let me share a revelation I have discovered. There are such things as 21.5 inch usb-powered portable LCD displays, mostly by AOC I think.
Of course any decent monitor could be used, seeing as how you already have the 680m, upgrading the processor will allow you to play all the new games on very satisfying settings.

New alienware laptops just don't interest me because it wouldn't be a significant enough upgrade at the moment (except 680m SLI or 780m which I can't afford). So I plan on getting the portable LCD and keep on gaming on my m15x!

Hope you get the m18x for a good price if that is what you decide to get.

Just checked out the sun monitors , very cool. I just dont have the room for it. I am trying to find an m18 with 780sli but very hard to find for decent price. I really hate how aw doesn't let us customize our orders. I would rather get a smaller cpu now and better gpus. I can always get a cpu for decent price later but not so with gpus.
