    Hi there all,

While i wait nervously for what will land on my door step in the next month (my shiney M15x) i cant help wondoring if the display port will function like HDMI with the appropreite adapter.

Has anyone with a GTX 260m with the displayport connection, got sound and video working via an adapter to HDMI on a large screen TV?

    thank you.

    Biggy

ok, in my eagerness to help others, i made an error. above comment was edited.

it seems the M15x does not have any digital audio outs.

I have found USB->HDMI adaptors, but I cannot see if they have audio with them. but what i have read is that nne of the USB solutions will support HDCP, so no retail Blu-Ray if they require HDCP.

I guess it all comes down to, what do you plan on connecting it to?

i hear that the displyport can carry audio, but doesnt on apples.

so dispite the googling (which i have done myself at great length) i would apprechiate somone whos actually tryed it commenting. It would suck if the video worked through an HDMI adapter, but then i need a seperate cable to link up sound, which may lead to further compliactions on the actual TV being able to use a HDMI video signal with seperate audio - since HDMI IS ment to carry both, being the whole idea in the first place! ;p

    Hello,

I havent bought an adapter yet but I do own the laptop and I have a screenshot showing in the audio playback settings a DisplayPort. I am assuming that it will output audio though the displayport and you just need an adapter that will convert it.

I wish Alienware let us buy one from them or at least recommended one because the descriptions on the ones I have seen are not uniform and hard to determine what they will do.

I am hoping we can find one that will work.

I found those adapters. I am still hesitant that they don't say anything about audio but they are 1.3a compliant so they should by standard have it. I might order one up over the weekend and I will update you if it works.

I will most likely be getting this one because its supported in case something doesn't work.

The Display Port on M15x indeed supports sound. You can tell if you go to sound/playback devices. The display port is listed as an audio playback device along with the speakers on the laptop. If you look at the Belkin Displayport to HDMI adapter that Dell sells it claims to support sound. So if you put 2 and 2 together its a pretty safe bet that it works. Can't be 100% because I havent tried this myself.

    Heres the link..

This is quoted from the Dell DisplayPort/HDMI Adapter page
In the articles below (First Post of link below), I noticed that the HD 4870 Mobility graphics cards do support HDMI Audio, but the nVidia card review made no mention of HDMI Audio in the review. I also pointed out in that thread that I though it was "odd".

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=423263

And even on nVidia's Product sheet in the Speicifications section it says it supports HDMI Audio but through an SPDIF connection.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gtx_260m_us.html

However, on ATI's Product Specification page it clearly states that the Mobility Radeon 4870 Supports 7.1 Channel HDMI Audio through ATI Avivo.

    http://www.amd.com/us/products/note...00/hd-4850-4870/Pages/hd-4850-4870-specs.aspx

Whereas it appears that the Mobility Radeon 3800 Series graphcs cards only support up to 5.1 Channel HDMI Audio through ATI Avivo.

Thanks for bringing this up BiggyRox. I'm looking to make use of the displayport to HDMI to AV receiver for my setup. Then to be able to watch Blu-ray movies on my TV and sound system.

I haven't placed an order yet, but if you do get confirmation from that and could let me know, that would be great.

    Thanks.

great responcs there guys, but still no word from anoyone thats actually ordered one of these seemingly ideal solutions.

Due to dell having some trouble with the EU ordering i wont be getting my laptop for another few weeks, i think i will put an order in for a dell displayport->HDMI connector soon and let you all know how it goes when the loverlyness finally lands on my door.

Even if i have to take my sound from another source, say the headphone jack, i will still need the video on HDMI as my TV has no DVI or VGA input options so getting one of these adapters is a must.

Will bring this thread back to life then!

    Hi,

I have ordered but have not yet received the newest M15x. I have a Dell Latitude E6500 with an nvidia quadro 160m and a displayport output on the back of the system. I have successfully ported video and sound through that port, via an HDMI adapter, to my 46 inch Samsung LN46A650 without any trouble. I am presuming that the nvidia 260m would be able to do the same thing, but I will let you know for sure when I get the computer. I would be extremely surprised if it did not (and pretty pissed off, too).

Well the one from Dell isn't HDCP compatible according to NVIDIAs Control Panel on my Monitor that is HDCP compatible so I will be calling tomorrow to get it returned and have to continue searching hopefully we can find one that works.

    EDIT:
I did a test tonight and it played blue ray fine on my monitor in 1080p so I checked settings using Cyberlink bluray advisor and it says I have Digital with HDCP so I dont know what Nvidia's conflict is. I am trying to find someone with a hdmi tv to test sound capabilities.

    Picture proof of conflict attached.

    hi biggy rox
i recently face an issue with the displayport > HDMI converter > TV . there is no audio being output on the TV if i used the latest Nvidia driver from Nvidia website, but if i revert the driver back to the factory installed driver, the audio came back on again.

i have the same specs with your machine, just wondering do you have this issue with your M15x when you update driver from nvidia website ?

I have the same issue, with the dell stock drivers audio through the display port works fine. When I updated to 197.16 (i think) audio through the display port was lost. I have seen another post in a different forum also confirming this.

I have both a DisplayPort to HDMI cable and a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Currently using the DisplayPort to HDMI cable at work in conjunction with a HDMI to DVI adapter as my display at work only has DVI. Works great! Not a single hiccup. Beautiful picture. The monitor is not HDCP compliant by the way and I have no issues watching Blu-ray's on the monitor as I'm running AnyDVD HD in the background. Actually purchased AnyDVD HD just for this purpose. I never plan on backing up any Blu-ray discs which is the primary use for AnyDVD HD. I just run it in the background as it actively strips the HDCP protection away for any given Blu-ray I have inserted into the drive allowing me to then watch said Blu-ray via my non-HDCP compliant display device. At home I'm just using a straight DisplayPort cable to my DELL 2407. I got the DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, so that I could connect a separate HDMI cable at whatever given length for use with my plasma display or home theater projector. My home theater receiver does not offer HDMI switching unfortunately, but I can test the audio functionality of my M15x via DisplayPort->HDMI at a friends place Monday and report back my findings.

that is so kind of you , would appreciate if you could let me know the driver version that works with audio output from DisplayPort > HDMI adapter/cable.

my system is currently at the dell workshop and there is no way for me to test it out, they thought it was mobo / VGA card faulty which i really doubt so.

now i have to choose between performance < - > audio output from display port , the temp solution is to stick with the factory drivers which work really bad with the new released game

from what i've noticed Nvidia just recently released their VERDE driver, i don't even know what was this VERDE all about , just wondering could that be the root cause of this issue.

VERDE NOTEBOOK RELEASE 256 *Beta ( have not tried yet )

NOTEBOOK RELEASE 195 ( have not tried yet )

NOTEBOOK RELEASE 186 ( ver 186.47 Dell factory driver , working perfectly fine with audio output from Display port )

My M15X came with a displayport to hdmi adapter in the box. I played a BR disc the other night and to get audio I had to purchase an audio cable (headphone jack to RCA audio plugs). Plugged it into the headphone jack on the M15X and into the 'audio in' on my big screen HDTV. Everything worked great. Beautiful picture and good audio.

there is no seperate "audio" in cable needed for this , because your HDMI adapter carries both audio and video signal.

but you have to use dell stocked driver in order to get audio output to your TV
if you use the latest Nvidia driver from Nvidia.com , you will only get display signal, no sound

Ok, I just went to Nvidia and downloaded 197.16. This is the part when I feel like such a noob asking the following question. I drilled down in 'device manager' to check that the proper driver was installed and found driver version to be: 8.17.11.9716. I am assuming that the x.xx.x1.9716 indicates the updated driver was installed in addition to all the other version numbers?

I'm currently using the displayport with the HDMI adapter, on both my office viewsonic 1080p monitor and my Sony 52in 1080p LCD when I'm at home...but I've noticed a problem...the image is always slightly cropped all the way around the screen, on both monitors (it's much more noticeable on the work monitor) I've checked and re-checked both monitor aspect ratio settings and it seems to be the signal coming from the DisplayPort or video driver.

I'm at a loss as to what's causing this 'cropped' image. I've tried other screens as well. The image is perfect when I use the standard VGA output, connected to the Viewsonic display, but this only happens when I use the displayport connection. I have the latest Catalyst drivers, 10.6, but I haven't found a way to get Hydravision installed into CCC...maybe that would help??

Any thoughts, similar experiences out there?

    Hi there

I'm not quite sure what's going on here, so many issues and some of you are making this look like an impossible task, IMO.

I got my M15x with nvidia 260m, it came with the displayport to HDMI adapter (as previously stated) and all I needed was a cheap HDMI cable to connect it to my TV (50 inch Panasonic Plasma TV). The moment I connected both together I got image straight ahead, no need to configure anything at all! BUT I must add that originally I was not able to see the whole picture (the destop on my M15x looked perfect while the same desktop was kinda cut off on the TV) but this was fixed withing minutes by simply resizing the desktop through the Nvidia manager.

The audio, I couldn't get it at the first try, but then after reading the manual I notice that you don't have to purchase any extra cable, all you need to do is right click on the audio icon on the task bar, select playback devices, right click the HDMI icon and set it as the default device (no problem with this, as it will only work as default when the HDMI cable is plugged in).

And in regards to the HDCP feature, well my TV said it supports it, my Nvidia card said it did not, but after playing with the setting on the Nvidia manager, it finally showed that my display supported HDCP, so I guess that if you are not getting this option, start playing with the settings a lil bit (it you have any problem you can always restore the default settings).

Try it, I've been playing Dirt2 on different friend's houses and all I take with me is the adapter and my HDMI cable, and I get both audio and video going with no problem!

I got my LG 42" HDTV and tried connecting with display port to hdmi adapter and then hdmi cable to TV. I got the picture instantly but there was no sound. After going through this forum, I found out that I've recently upgraded to latest nvidia driver and it doesn't seems to work for sound as expected.

Then I tried my alienware's resource DVD and installed all the back dated drivers and the sound started coming immediately. For me the stock driver version is : 186.47 (or 8.15.11.8647).

My suggestion is to try using your resource DVD first. The only trade off is dropped frame rate for latest games. :(

Good Luck and enjoy your HDTV.

If you use these really cool things called EYES you can SEE that an HDMI cable is slightly different from a display port hole. So NO you can't plug HDMI into DP. Need adapter or conversion cable.

I am having audio sync issues through the display port. The sound is a second behind the video. Is there anyway to sync the audio with the video?
