hey guys, im pretty tech savvy and know how to handle myself around computers and upgrades and overclocking and things in general.

i want to put an 880m gpu i got from an msi GT60 into my m15x. so, what do i need to know?

is this plug & play? (im guessing not)
drivers, will they work? (im ok with modding but any help/details would be appreciated)
power supply? (i can get the m17x 240w if i need)
fan control? (will it work automatically, etc.)

anything else i am not thinking of?

any and all help is super appreciated, ty!!!!

What power supply did your GT60 come with? Mine had a 180W powersupply that worked fine with both the 880m and 980m.

Sorry that was a slip, I meant what power supply does your AW have. Lol it doesn't matter what the old one had. But anyway yeah I think your gonna want at least a 180W psu for it.

That was a slip on my part, I meant on your AW lol it doesn't matter what the old laptop had. But yeah your gonna want at least a 180W psu I believe to fully power the card.

If you plan on overclocking, you want a bigger PSU. Overclocked, the 920xm can draw well over 100W on its own. You're also going to want to pull the center pin on the PSU output plug to eliminate throttling. This can be done by purchasing a right angle adapter and pulling the center pin from that. Pulling the center pin will disable battery charging which is solved by removing the right angle adapter and inserting the power plug from the PSU directly to the laptop. I'm currently using the 201W PA7E power supply and it works fine with my overclocked 920xm and overvolted Firepro m6000.

As far as the 880m is concerned, expect it to run hot in the M15X.

The 880M runs very hot indeed. You will most likely have to cap the FPS to keep it from getting too hot. The 780M is considered too hot for the M15x. The 880M will be worse.

You can set 780M clocks if you want so it will run cooler.

Prepare to have runaway temps. M15x cant tame a 980M even with liquid metal tim. 880M is just as hot.

Would actually recommend against using this card in the M15x.

Well in that case under clock it and cap your fps. It should be ok if you do those things. Maybe try an undervolt too.

True that. Just hope you get it at bargain basement prices (in other words nothing more than 780M price)

880M is running hotter than 980M because it's overclocked 780M. TDP with 880M is about 120W but you can always set 780M clock and have 100W GPU so no problem here.

download nVidiaInspector and you can under clock and under volt. Be careful with the undervolt. I can cause your system to be unstable and crash. I would go with lowering you CPU clock first and see what that gets you. Base clock for a GTX 780M is 823 MHz. For the 880M the base clock is 954 MHz.

The easy way to monitor temps is with GPU-Z, click on the sensors tab. If you want to monitor in-game then setup HWiNFO64 and RivaTuner Statistics Server. That way you can monitor GPU load, GPU clockspeed, etc while in game.

    780M is 122W. 980M and 880M dont ask :D 680M and 7970M were 100W.
