hey guys i just replaced my 740qm with a 920xm. i wanted to see how much of a boost i would be able to get in cpu instensive games like gta 4 and bad company 2. there was no performance boost whatsoever :/. i was expecting at least something from it, but were my expectations too high? i also repasted my gpu (got rid of dell's thermal paste) with ic diamond 7 and my temps are about mid-50's and when playing games it goes up t 109! you think i should repaste it or should i w8 for the paste to settle in?

First, regarding the performance issue. Are you using ThrottleStop?

Second, those temps are way too high. No offence intended, but you need to paste it again.

even without throttlestop you should see an advantage over the 740qm.. check if your cpu is throttling.. sometimes the multiplier gets stuck on 9 or whatever and that causes your cpu to run at slow levels..

ok i will repaste and no i am not using throttlestop (don't know how to use it). if my cpu is throttling then how can i fix that with throttlestop?

edit: just checked up on my temps when idle. right now its averaging about high 40's and about 50 at max. before it was at least 5 degrees higher at idle. should i wait a couple days to see if they begin to lower or should i just repaste now?

i don't think you'll notice that much of an increase... Maybe with fraps you cand tell a minimal difference in fps but not with the naked eye

Download ThrottleStop here Download ThrottleStop 3.00 Free - Performance Adjustment Tool for Core 2 / Core i CPUs - Softpedia
Unzip it and right click on the red T and send it to your desktop. Doubleclick on it,hit run, the 1st time you run it you get a warning box, click ok and T.S. window will open.Put a checkmark in each of the 3 boxes on the left beginning with"Clock Modulation" EIST and C1E should already be checked. Then click on TRL and another little window will open. The first 4 cores should read 24,23,17,17,those are your stock settings. To start with increase all 4 cores to 26.Hit apply and ok,that will close the little window.Next click on TPL and you'll see your stock settings at 55 and 55. Raise the TDP to 95 and raise the TDC to 80. Hit apply and ok and the little window will close. Next hit "turn on" and "save". Either leave the T.S. window open or minimize it when benching or gaming. DO NOT close it completely. Try those settings but I wouldn't go any higher than 26 on all 4 cores. You can make 2 cores 26 and 2 cores 24. Just play around with it. You can read this too http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...arket-upgrades/531329-throttlestop-guide.html

    This.
I upgraded the CPU sand GPU and had worse performance than before. I used TS and now the system is blazing.
+ rep to USMC for TS info.

Oh yeah, keep an eye on those temps. My CPU has yet to higher than 76. If yours keeps getting in the high 90's or even 100's, repaste.
    Good luck.

wow right now my temps for the gpu are about high 30's and low 40's. i guess i just had to w8 a bit. are these temps fine right now? also i will try throttlestop right now.

at first my 940xm was running in the mid 50's to 60c at idle.. i repasted it with 1cd7 and (pasted it correctly this time) the temps are now idling at 47c to 50c.. i personally put my tdp at 80 and tdc at 75 with all four cores running 25 multiplier to be the sweet spot.. i use it mostly for gaming and if im doing other stuff i set a plan for (like usmc said) 2 cores on 26 and 2 cores on 24.. with a tdp of 75 and a tdc of 75.. just try many settings(but if you have a more powerful gpu after try to run the cpu at stock levels as the psu cant provide enough power to all components oc'ed.. hope it helps

those are good temps.. check to see what speed your cpu is running at those temps.. and check what they are when loaded..

The beauty of the 920XM is that you can change the multipliers in throttle stop so that you can run it at like 3GHZ instead of 2, providing you with a significant performance boost in CPU intensive stuff like video encoding/editing and some games, but since you haven't really unlocked that potential yet (your running it stock which is only SLIGHTLY better than a 820QM), you're not going to see that difference.

i overclocked the 920xm with throttlestop (26 across all cores) and i see about a 1 or 2 fps boost in gta 4 and none with battlefield bad company 2 :/

i doubt you will see much benefit in FPS with the CPU ... you should see benefits in game load times though ...

EG: my housemate has a notebook with a better CPU but worse GPU. His games load faster than mine, but my games run smoother & at higher settings ;-)

yeah i can tell that tons of applications load faster now. well i better start looking at the 6970m :D whats the difference in fps from a 5850m to the 6970m?

also i repasted and i get high 30's when idle for my gpu and after browsing and stuff it becomes high 40's. when playing games it gets around high 60's to high 70's except for the memIO which gets around 90's for some reason. i dont think thats normal right? would another repaste be helpful? ive been using inap's thermal paste guide as a reference and did exactly as it said.

The MEMIO temp sensor is on the die, so it's not to do with the thermal pads. That being said, it doesn't hurt to replace them either. They are the sticky pads that sit on the ram chips on your GPU.

The MEMIO is always the hottest temp on the GPU, but going by what you said about it being significantly hotter than the other temps, I would suggest that your paste hasn't spread evenly across the die. I suggest you repaste.

ok so after repasting for the third time my temps are the same as last time only the memIO only goes as high as high 80's instead of 90's when playing games. are these temps good enough?
