I'm looking forward to upgrade my aging gtx260m on my m15x to newer and more powerful gtx460m.
I was scooping around ebay and found this and was wondering if it is compatable with m15x or not.

Yep it will be completely compatible with a significant performance increase from your last card.

To what these forums told me was that the 5850m card is much cheaper and a little more powerful than the 460m too. Unless NVIDIA is mandatory, I say get the 5850m.

Stock, the 460M bests the 5850m.
BUT, the 5850m can be overclocked much further than the 460M can be.
Unless you plan to use the features of the Nvidia card (Physx, CUDA, etc.) through a lot of heavy video converting/editing, I'd suggest going with the 5850
Also, if you have the money, you should definitely check out the 6970m or 6990m!

I have 2 to juggle around. When I'm in my no game phase I use the nvidia for videos etc. Probably put it in to play Arkham City. The rest of the time I use my 6990m :D

    Thanks for replies guys!
I didn't know m15x could house something beyond gtx460m/5850m, but if it can, why not :)

So, does that mean any card with MXM 3.0 type B connector will fit on m15x? Or, are there any restrictions I should be aware of?

Btw, I also found gtx560m from the same seller for $290, which ironically is cheaper then gtx460m. Here is a link.

It's hard to say what exactly is going to work and what isn't... being within the power limits and thermal envelope isn't sufficient. For example the GTX 470m doesn't work at 3d clocks unless you modify the VBIOS.

I think the 560m is likely to work since it is almost identical to the 460m (when you look at the architecture), but it hasn't been tried so far.
Would be great to see someone putting this in a M15x.

It will work but since it is a clevo you may need a modded driver for some things to work correctly and someone told me the holes on that one are welded and need to be drilled. The same guy has the 5870 for $322 shipped so go that route, that is the route I am going and its more powerful than the 5850 or 460m.

You're right. 5870 does seem like a much better choice. I'd take your advise and go with 5870.
    Thanks again to everyone!

as far as the ebay cards (460M or the 5870) go, will the same issue with the fans happen as it does with the 6970M?

can't say for the 460m, but my 5870 (clevo) did not have an issue with the fans.
it did however have issues with powerplay. i had to manually downclock the card for 2d speeds.
oh and sound over hdmi did not work.

The Clevo 460m GTX will have no problems with the fans or clocking down to lower clocks when idle, all those work. Don't know about Audio, never tried.

Just a heads up, the gtx 560m does indeed work in the M15x. Look for the thread titled M15x and gtx 560m. Cant link to it right now as im on my phone. It has some good oc'ing as well. You could always try an pm dutchess63, he's the one that tested it out and confirmed it working.

just wanna say to beware of the gtx 560m. I know some of the Asus gaming laptops have 560m's that don't have as good as performance as the 460m do to having a smaller bus rate or bit rate, i forgot the term. Just do your research before you buy :)

Asus 560M vbios has lower voltages in its voltage table than the others MSI, Clevo & Eurocom(mine) have

    Hi guys,

Sorry to annoy you with the same question as everyone, but since a video card is kind of expensive for me, I wanted to be sure that I was going to be something that will actually fit in my m15x :).

    Nvidia GTX 460M MXM 3.0 TYPE B 1.5GB GDDR5 Video card | eBay

So heres the video card I found. The price is good around 215$, but it used. So my three questions:

1: Does this video card will fit correctly? If My understanding is correct, I have to check for MXM 3 type b?
2: Do you think the price is good and would you buy it used?
3: Finaly, does changing the card will be hard for someone with no real experience with a a laptop. I have exprience with desktop computer, but this is the first time I will open my laptop. I will during the same time clean it.

    Thanks a lot all!

    Philippe

P.S. I'm french, so sorry if I made some big mistakes ;)

    Hello Phillipe,

    1. Yes M15x is MXM 3.0 Type B, that card should work.

    2. I recently bought a ES 6970m from the Notebook Review Marketplace from Table21: http://forum.notebookreview.com/com...ards-alienware-m18x-pulls-tons-new-stuff.html

It is only $200 for the card, which is a pretty awesome deal considering the 6970 is more powerful than the 460m.

    3. I don't think you'll find it too difficult, just gotta take care with static and take your time.

    Thanks a a lot Ninefingers.

So if my understandings is correct, the right one is the: 3x ES 6970 - pulled from an m17x r3 - $200 (1 sold 2 left)

So it will fit nice in the m15x?

Anyone agree? The ES 6970 will not overheat or I won,t be more difficult to install?

    Thanks again

    Philippe

That is the correct one, he charged by a further $25 for shipping to New Zealand.

It will fit inside, it isn't officially supported in the M15x so there might be a few extra things you have to do to get it working with fan control and drivers. (See the 6970 in the M15x thread).

The card does run hotter, you might need some thermal pads from what I gather, but mostly just a good paste.

I haven't actually installed mine yet, my ES 6970 card is on the way!

As others have noted - the ATI cards can provide more horsepower for gaming, though the 6970 series also draw a lot of power, so there are sometimes compromises. If you are planning to do video or phote editing (esp. the former), note that Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro make use of the Nvidia cards to increase rendering speed, and this is not available with other cards.

    Happy hunting

    Joe
